Source: usatoday.com

The keto diet. You’ve probably heard of it by now.

It’s the low-carb, high-fat diet that caught on and spread quickly, leading some to label it as a fad, while others praised its effectiveness.

The new year brings in an annual flood of personal health goals, and for those trying to lose weight, the keto diet might have come into consideration. Is it effective? More importantly, is it healthy?

Before making any commitments to keto, it’s important to understand what you’re getting yourself into. In addition to what the health professionals below have to say about keto, it’s important to consult your doctor before embarking on any high-fat diets.

First of all, what is keto?

Though there are slightly different versions of the ketogenic diet, it’s primarily based on a low intake of carbohydrates coupled with a high intake of fat and protein.

Generally, this means people on the diet get 70% to 80% of their daily calories from fat, about 20% from protein and about 5% from carbs.

The decreased intake of carbs forces the body into the state of ketosis, in which fat becomes the main provider of fuel for the body.

Though similar, keto is not the same as the Paleo and Atkins diets, which also feature low-carb routines.

Experts say keto diet is not the answer

The diet has been associated with effective weight loss, but it doesn’t necessarily get the approval from doctors.

“I wouldn’t recommend the keto diet to anybody,” Jeffrey Mechanick, medical director at Mount Sinai Heart’s Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Clinical Cardiovascular Health, told USA TODAY.

When it comes to dissecting popular diets such as keto, doctors stress the importance of knowing the difference between weight loss and genuine overall health.

Reducing your intake of carbs, as the keto diet does, goes hand-in-hand with reducing intake of whole grains, fruits and some vegetables, which raises red flags for health professionals.

“That’s where I get a little concerned about the keto diet,” Vasanti Malik, adjunct assistant professor of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told USA TODAY.

“You want to be mindful, because these foods – whole grains, fruits and vegetables – carry a number of beneficial nutrients – vitamins, polyphenols, fiber – that have been shown time and time again to be beneficial for cardiometabolic health.”

Fitness shaming:It’s keeping people from working out

As the keto diet essentially nixes the body’s intake of carbs, the body searches for an alternative source of fuel. Before long, the body breaks down fat, muscle and tissues to sustain itself, Mechanick said.

“In theory, the keto diet basically mimics starvation,” Mechanick said. “If you don’t eat carbohydrates but you eat an excessive amount of fat and protein, you’re still going to waste tissue. Tissue is still going to burn off.”

Yes, you might experience weight loss on the keto diet, but that might not actually be good for you, considering what you give up.

“I don’t feel particularly comfortable telling people to reduce intake of things that we know offer benefits for health,” Malik said.

If not keto diet, then what?

Diet-driven people might find this part hard to digest.

Doctors are moving away from what we traditionally think of as a “diet,” one with specific restrictions or calorie goals. Instead, they promote a healthier overall lifestyle.

“The vernacular is changing,” Mechanick said. “We try not to even use the word ‘diet.’ We try to use the phrase ‘eating pattern.'”

There’s a “rebound” issue with many fad diets such as keto, Malik said. You go on the diet, lose weight, but what happens after that? Most people struggle to stick with it.

“Without a realistic lifestyle change, the individual is going to regain the weight,” she said.

The answer might not be a traditional “diet” at all, but there are changes you can make to shed weight while leading a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

The importance comes in the quality of the foods you eat, not necessarily the number of calories you consume, Malik said. She favors of eating patterns that don’t abide by a restrictive calorie count, because they generally help people stick with the pattern longer.

What should you eat to lose weight?

Mechanick recommends minimizing your intake of two types of carbs – sugars and starches – while boosting another: fiber. High-fiber foods, including vegetables, low-glycemic index fruits, beans and nuts, are instrumental to a healthy eating pattern, he said.

“If you can get it up to seven to 10 servings a day, that’s great,” he said. “You can’t do that with the keto diet.”

Malik urges people trying to lose weight to target foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts, while limiting saturated fat, added sugar and added sodium. Balance those practices with daily physical exercise, and you’ve established a solid base for weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Although she argues against daily calorie counting, Malik urges caution about portion sizes – there’s no use in overeating. Avoid appetizers and snacks in front of screens, and limit meals to one plate of food, the American Heart Association advises.

Losing weight has its benefits, both in a physical and mental sense. But when striving to eat well and hit the treadmill, don’t lose sight of what it means to be healthy.

“People have to be content,” Mechanick said. “They have to be fulfilled. That’s what being healthy and productive is, and that’s really the endpoint.”

Gaining traction all over the years from people while being frowned upon by some number of health experts, the ketogenic, or keto diet is one of the most unique diet trends out there. And one can’t deny this whether you agree with it or not.

This is because the diet itself combines the power of calorie restriction with the benefits that you can get from putting your body in nutritional ketosis, which when done properly, can provide a number of health benefits while also helping you achieve weight loss at the same time.

Still, many people get it wrong and oftentimes misunderstood how keto is supposed to work, thanks in part to some common myths that people throw around.

In any case, here are a few “keto strategies” that will hopefully get rid of these common misconceptions and help you achieve the results that you’re aiming for.

Only eat keto food and ingredients

These are foods that are very low in carbohydrates. However, what’s low for you is determined by your daily carb limit. This means that you need to be more vigilant with your food choices because even healthier food like fruits and veggies can still pack a lot of carbs. With keto, however, do eat low-carb vegetables, meats, nuts and seeds, high fat dairy, sweeteners, avocado and berries.

Know what to focus on

And what you should focus on is being in a calorie deficit because it’s the key to burning off your own fat. To do this, you need to focus on two things: eat protein-dense and fiber-rich foods and eliminating all calorically-dense processed foods from your diet.

Track your macros

People usually tend to underestimate how many calories they really eat. Tracking yours can help you be more aware of where you are in the diet. Thankfully, there are many keto calculators that you can find on the internet.

Change your food environment

Of course, this can be hard for some people since changing your environment for one diet can be a bit much. Still, you can do this by only allowing keto-friendly food in your house, planning your meals ahead of time (stops you from overeating as well), only eating foods that you track and avoiding unhealthy foods you can binge on.

Prepare for keto concerns

Unfortunately, putting your body through ketosis isn’t that common, and so your body might have some adjusting to do. This “adjusting” comes in the form of the so-called “keto flu,” which may have symptoms like sugar cravings, dizziness, cramping, poor focus and insomnia. Luckily, drinking lots of water can help clear these symptoms. They would disappear as your body adapts more.

New Delhi: Weight loss is part diet and part exercise. Other factors that play a crucial role in determining weight loss are lifestyle choices like smoking, alcohol and drug use, etc. Various diets for weight loss have come into the picture in recent times. While some have been hailed by medical professionals and dietitians as a “healthy lifestyle”, others have been declared fads, or unhealthy, even when they help you lose weight.

Another diet plan or pattern is now being explored is the Dubrow diet. The diet was developed by a reality TV couple and follows the method of intermittent fasting. Here is what you need to know about the Dubrow diet.

The Dubrow Diet for Weight Loss

The Dubrow diet sounds like a mix of the Keto diet and Intermittent Fasting. Low-carb food is consumed, in time-restricted intervals, to boost weight loss. The creators of the diet also claim that it can improve blood sugar control, improve energy levels, and slow signs of ageing.

What food is consumed on the Dubrow diet?

It is a low-carb diet, where one consumes food that is low on calories. Foods consumed on the Dubrow Diet are lean proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables and fruits.

How does the Dubrow diet work?

Dubrow diet’s emphasis on healthy eating will definitely help you lose weight in the process. When you cut out processed and oily food from your diet, your body naturally feels healthy and fit.

Foods consumed on the Dubrow diet are rich in fibre, nutrients, protein, etc. which can help your body become healthier. The foods consumed on the Dubrow diet can also make you feel fuller since they are high in protein and fibre, and help curb appetite, which can restrict the amount of food you eat. Feeling fuller with the healthy food you eat is very essential, especially with time-restricted eating, as you may feel hungry during the fasting hours.

The Dubrow diet is low in carbs, which can also help improve metabolism and help you lose weight, especially from the abdomen. Intermittent fasting has been hailed as one of the best diets for weight loss and health, which is also a part of the Dubrow diet.

Source: moms.com

Every year, US News & World Report ranks trending diets for the year ahead. Despite its overwhelming popularity, the report ranked the ketogenic diet as the worst for healthy eating and the second to last overall.

For those who don’t know, the ketogenic diet is a very rigid regimen for rapid weight loss. The plan essentially tricks your body by depriving it of carbohydrates. Eventually, this lack of carbohydrates triggers a metabolic state called ketosis, which causes your body to burn fat for energy instead of storing it.

Proponents of the diet say that it has evidence of success, plus it allows you to eat high-fat foods like red meats, fatty fish, butter, and cheese while still helping you lose weight. Furthermore, the diet can help people with Type 2 diabetes improve their blood sugar levels and help people with epilepsy reduce the frequency of their seizures.

However, the diet also requires that you consume no more than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day, and if you mess up, your body will simply start storing fat again. This can have dangerous results since the diet suggests that you consume fat for upwards of 80 percent of your daily caloric intake.

For its evaluation, US News & World Report evaluated 35 of the most popular diets based on seven categories. These categories included nutritional completeness, ease of dietary plan, weight loss potential, and likelihood of disease prevention. Not surprisingly, the high-fat, low-carb trendy diet plan performed low in nearly every category.

Because the keto diet heavily relies on saturated fats, it can enhance a person’s risk of heart disease. Therefore, it scored poorly in the area of disease prevention. Because of the aforementioned potential for errors that undo the diet just from eating things like fruits and whole grains, it also scored poorly in the area of ease and sustainability.

In fact, the keto diet only excelled in one area: rapid weight loss potential. In this category, it tied with Atkins, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig for third place.

However, experts caution that a diet’s ability to help you rapidly lose weight doesn’t make it healthy. Nutrition specialists affirm that nutritionally unbalanced diets like keto and Atkins almost guarantee short-term losses but the very nature of their restrictive plans make long-term adherence all but impossible.

In addition to the long-term disbenefits, the keto diet’s rapid weight loss technique can pose numerous other consequences as well. Quick, significant jumps in weight can cause stretch marks, changes in taste perception, interruptions in your menstrual cycle, and even depression. Furthermore, most experts still advise that slow and steady weight loss is the best method for overall health and long-term maintenance.

If you’re looking for a regimented weight loss plan that cuts out some of the negative aspects of the keto diet, some health advocates recommend a hybrid version of the keto diet with either vegan meals prepared at home or Mediterranean diet aspects.

This diet cuts out high-calorie, processed foods for more nutrient-dense items. These vitamin-rich foods provide nutrients that help prevent diabetes, cancer, and other diseases.

What’s more, US News & World Report awarded this easy-to-follow diet as the top choice for a third year in a row.

While fad diets tempt us all, it’s important to research any diet and consult your doctor before jumping on the bandwagon. A medical professional or experienced dietitian can help you plan eating habits that will provide the best results and health benefits for your body without major negative side effects. The biggest lesson we can take from US News & World Report’s study is this: Just because plans like the keto diet have massive followings and promise rapid weight loss, that doesn’t mean they’re safe or even remotely beneficial in the long term.

In particular, food has become a topic of serious contention and everyone seems to have an opinion on which diets are the best.

However, with the decade coming to an end – top dietitian Paula Norris thought it was about time some of the biggest diet myths of 2019 were debunked.

Here, she reveals the six biggest diet myths of this year – and tells us which ones we should be ignoring all together.

1. Egg yolks are bad for you

Eggs are a great source of protein and nutrients – however, egg yolks have been demonised in the health-food industry this year as causing blood cholesterol levels to rocket.

However, Paula has now debunked this myth and said that eggs have a nutritional benefits – and we shouldn’t completely cut them from our diets.

“This one is understandably confusing because in the past it was advised that eggs should be limited,” she wrote on her Instagram.

“The Australian Heart Foundation did an extensive review on the current evidence and made new recommendations that stated that there is no limit of eggs for most people.

“The exception is for those who have heart disease or type 2 diabetes who should limit intake to seven eggs per week.”

2. Keto is the best way to go

From Kim Kardashian to Gwyneth Paltrow – droves of celebrities this year have hailed the keto diet for their trim physiques.

However, Paula is not convinced by the restrictive diet plan, which involves swapping out carbs for fats and proteins.

She says: “There are easier ways to lose weight. Sustaining keto long term is extremely challenging.

“The high saturated fat and exclusion of wholegrains, most fruits and some vegetables may have negative impacts.”

She adds: “In fact keto can leave you devoid of nutrients, gut loving fibre and is VERY hard to sustain long term.”

3. Dairy is the devil

A dairy backlash this year caused droves of people to swear off milk and cheese for good.

In particular, some claim that because it is high in saturated fat it can trigger heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Despite this, Paula stresses the importance of incorporating dairy-rich foods in your diet.

She says: “For those who can tolerate it, it is an extremely nutrient rich option to include in your diet.”

It comes after a recent study revealed that eating dairy makes people happier – as it increase pleasure levels by 25 per cent.

4. Vegan is the best way of eating

Many people have chosen to go vegan this year as a way of eating more healthily and helping the environment.

It involving eating only plants such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits.

Paula says you need to be particularly careful if you have a vegan diet – and ensure you are getting the nutrients you need from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet.

Paula says: “If you follow a vegan diet then careful planning is needed to ensure your nutrient intake is adequate.

“Nutritional deficiencies can have both short and long term complications.”

5. Carbs are bad

It’s a common belief that munching on anything carb-heavy can ruin an otherwise good diet.

However, Paula has debunked this myth – and claimed eating carby foods are important in our diet – as long as you don’t go overboard.

She says: “Carbs always cop unfair criticism.

“If you’re smart with how you eat them, I.e. limit processed, choose mostly whole grain and don’t go overboard with the portions then our bodies love us for eating them.

“Our body actually prefers to use them as energy over any other macronutrient.”

6. Detoxes are beneficial

Everyone this year has been encouraged to steam, juice and starve the unhealthy food they’ve eaten out of their systems with a detox diet.

It is all about expelling poisons and toxins from the body – like a sort of reset button.

You stop eating and drinking anything that isn’t just pure fruit and veg (and nuts in some cases), which then kickstarts a healthier regime.

Despite this, Paula says this diet myth is possibly the worst of all – largely as it can have a detrimental effect on the nutrients in your body.

“Detoxing. Don’t bother with it”, she urges.

“Our kidneys and liver do the detoxing for us. Detoxes leave you hungry, cranky, poor and devoid of nutrients.”

01/6Keto diet can give you some strange side effects

The ketogenic diet, also known as the keto diet, is one of the most popular diet trends these days. Whether you are trying to lose weight or just trying to stay fit, the low-carb and high-fat diet has proven to be quite effective and famous among the masses.

It is true and even science says that keto diet can help to lower the number on your scale. But it is also a reality that this diet is always accompanied by some weird side-effects, which you might not be aware of. So, before you consider following this diet, here are 5 common side effects of a keto diet that you must know:

02/6You may suffer from keto flu

Some people fall sick as soon as they start this diet trend. They may experience gastrointestinal distress, headache, and weakness. All these are symptoms of “Keto flu”. The flu is generally caused because your body starts using fat instead of carbs for producing energy. Studies suggest that about 25 percent of people who try the keto diet experience these symptoms. But there is nothing to worry about as keto flu goes away after a week as soon as your body adapts to the changes.

04/6You may feel constipated

When following a keto diet, you might find yourself running to the loo more than often. You may feel constipated due to lack of fiber consumption, which happens due to fewer carbs intake. Irregularity of the bowel movement is a common side-effect of a low-carb eating plan. To ensure easy bowel movement, eat some fiber from keto-friendly foods like avocado and nuts.

05/6You might have a keto breath

When you follow a keto diet, your body goes into ketosis and start producing by-products called ketones. Your body also produces a chemical called acetone, which is generally found in nail polish remover. The molecule of acetone is so small that it passes through the lungs and you exhale them while breathing. This results in “keto breath”. You might have a metallic taste in your mouth, but it goes away after a few weeks.

06/6You may feel thirsty all the time

You might genuinely feel parched while you are on the keto diet. This is because you excrete all the extra water from the body, which will make you feel thirsty all the time. So, try to drink more water to ensure that you are not dehydrated.

Keto has been proven to be one of the most effective weight reduction diets there is by restricting carbs and simple sugars. If you jumped on the keto bandwagon, lost some significant pounds and taken back control of your life, can you reintroduce carbs and sweets into your life?

With keto, transitioning is very tricky and should be done carefully. This is because the sudden introduction of carbs and sugar into your meal plan can lead to some unwanted results like weight gain, bloat, blood sugar fluctuations, sugar addiction, and lastly, increased hunger. You have to do things slowly and keep an eye out on any body fluctuations.

Go slow

Rather than ingesting vast amounts of carb-rich foods, start with gradual increments. Foods like whole-grain bread, seeded crackers, more avocados, or bean pasta are a great start as opposed to donuts and chips. These carbs digest slower and won’t leave you feeling hungry almost immediately. However, even with this slow introduction, you’re likely to notice about one or two-pound gains just because of their water content.

Go fiberous

Fiber-rich foods like grains, nuts, fruit, and seeds have a fair amount of carbohydrates in them, and they don’t leave you with the pang of hunger so fast. So incorporate everything from dark veggies to beans, legumes to wheat bread in your diet.

Avoid sugars

Keto is a natural sugar reducing diet that reduces one’s craving for sugar. So, to prevent restoring to default settings, go easy on the sugar. Beware of natural sugars too like that in honey and certain fruits.

If you achieved your dream weight with the keto diet, it’s essential to be cautious when transitioning off it.

These precautionary measures and pointers will keep you from losing all you’ve gained and gaining all you’ve lost with respect to weight and general fitness during your keto diet.

Have you ever wanted to lose weight without losing the pleasure of food? The ketogenic diet is the one for you.

The high-fat, low-carb diet is sure to kickstart your weight loss journey.

“Essentially, you are pushing carbs low enough that your body has no choice but to burn fat for fuel,” says Andres Ayesta, owner of Vive Nutrition in Orlando, Florida, told Today’s Dietitian.

The satisfaction and wholeness the foods reduce your sugar intake and helps you lose weight.

People on the keto diet say their bodies feel rejuvenated and refuelled with nutrients, rich vitamins and minerals.

Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for the body, however this diet focuses on reducing them and increasing fat intake.

This causes the body to stop producing glucose (a simple sugar that provides energy for the body) and encouraging the body to use fat as the main form of energy, causing weight loss.

The strict meal plan of 70 per cent fat, 25 per cent protein and 5 per cent carbs causes numerous foods to be restricted in the diet.

WHAT FOODS AREN’T ALLOWED ON THE KETO DIET?

• Grains, because of the high carbs

• Starchy vegetables and high-sugar fruits, such as bananas, dates, corn and potatoes, because they spike your blood sugar

• Sweetened yoghurts, because they have artificial flavours and preservatives

• Juices, because they have added sugar

• Chips and crackers, because they are high in sodium.

WHAT FOODS CAN YOU EAT ON THE KETO DIET?

Although, these are many foods that cannot be consumed while on the keto diet, there are various others that provide positive impacts to the body:

• Seafood, which is rich in B vitamins, potassium and selenium

• Low-carb vegetables, which are high in nutrients, vitamin C and fibre, and low in calories and carbs

• Cheese, which is low in carbs, and high in fat and calcium

• Avocados, which are high in potassium and improve cholesterol levels

• Meat and poultry, which have no carbs, are rich in B vitamins, and have high-quality protein • Eggs, which keeps blood sugar levels stable and contain antioxidants in yolk

• Dark chocolate and cocoa, which lower blood pressure, keeps arteries healthy and provide as many antioxidants as fruit.

Many people considering the keto diet struggle to know which snacks are compliant. Here are some healthy, on-the-go options that provide the body with valuable nutrients and vitamins that are crucial for growth and development:

HEALTHY SNACK IDEAS FOR THE KETO DIET

• Berries dipped in dark chocolate

• Celery and peanut butter

• Avocado and boiled eggs

• Olives and sliced salami

• Cottage cheese and berries

• Keto smoothies made with coconut milk, cocoa powder and avocado

• Fish and cauliflower

• Beef jerky.

Chances are you’ve heard of the latest diet and weight-loss fad sweeping the nation: the ketogenic diet (keto for short). It’s a low-carb, high-fat plan that’s become so popular, it was credited for making a dent in Weight Watchers’ numbers.

By drastically cutting back on carbs, keto followers reduce the amount of blood sugar available to be used as energy, which, in turn, causes their livers to produce more ketones for fuel. Since ketones are produced from fat and the body is relying on them for energy, fat burn increases dramatically.

As effective as keto may be, is it really healthy to manipulate the body in such a way? Dr. Joshua Latzman, cardiologist at Maple Medical, believes it can be. “A well-formulated keto diet full of non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats and high-quality protein can be healthy,” he says.

The keto diet isn’t just an effective way to lose weight—it may help improve your health in other aspects too. “From a cardiac standpoint, reducing the amount of carbs in the diet generally improves triglyceride levels,” Dr. Latzman says.

Keto may also help manage diabetes. “The diet prevents swings in blood sugar that can result from ingesting large amounts of carbohydrates, especially in people whose bodies have difficulty regulating blood sugar,” Dr. Latzman says. The keto diet is even suspected to be good for conditions such as epilepsy, dementia, and certain cancers, though much more research needs to be done.

But before you dive right in, consult with your doctor. “People with elevated LDL should be careful about significantly increasing their intake of saturated fat when undertaking the keto diet, as this may further increase their LDL levels,” Dr. Latzman warns. He recommends having bloodwork done prior to starting the keto diet and then being monitored on a regular basis to ensure that issues do not develop.

Additionally, “people taking exogenous insulin must work closely with their endocrinologists when drastically lowering their carbohydrate intake,” Dr. Latzman says. In fact, if you’re on any medications, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor just to make sure keto is the best plan for you. Taking the proper precautions is important whenever implementing a new diet or weight-loss plan, but generally, it is safe to give keto a go.

Followed by many celebrities and fitness enthusiasts to lose weight, the keto diet might seem a bit unreasonable for good heart health. After all, what you eat is a low-carb, moderate-protein, and high-fat diet.

The keto diet is all about getting in the state of ketosis, a metabolic process that is achieved when your body uses up fat for energy. Typically, your body uses up carbs for energy.

Although many criticize the keto diet, including fitness coach Jillian Michaels, it has produced some good results for a registered dietician Susan Ryskamp from the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

Earlier this year, Ryskamp said, “It [keto diet] can be very effective in treating and supporting weight loss,” noting that ketosis “kind of mimics a fasting state in the body.”

A 2017 study has found that losing even a small amount of weight through the keto diet can reduce obesity and high blood pressure, which are the potential cardiovascular risk factors. The study found that the keto diet reduced LDL (bad) cholesterol and increased HDL (good cholesterol), protecting heart health.

Also, the keto diet has been found to reduce high blood glucose (sugar) levels.

It is good to cut down low-quality carbs, sugar and starches from your diet, which are found in white bread and soft drinks, because they increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Even though those omissions are acceptable, vigilance is still needed, cautioned Ryskamp.

Please note that the keto diet is not about loading up on too much bacon and butter, which may trigger certain health issues.

Ryskamp said, “Make sure that the fats you are eating are healthy fats and not processed ones.” She noted that good fat sources, such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado, salmon, nuts and nut butters, are better from a cardiovascular standpoint.

However, the dietician explained that the long-term viability of the keto diet is not yet clear. The short-term results are well-documented but there is little research on whether the keto diet is safe for your heart health.

She explained, “Based on the literature, keto diets may be associated with some improvements in cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes, but these effects are usually limited in time.”

One Chinese study has suggested that there is a risk of heart disease with the keto diet. The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology annual conference in New Orleans, which found that patients who had a diet low in carbs for more than 20 years had a risk of atrial fibrillation. However, there were a few limitations of the study.

Dr. Neel Chokshi of the Sports Cardiology and Fitness Program at Penn Medicine thinks that the keto diet is likely to have some positive effects than other diets.

He said, “People who are dieting are more likely to pay attention to the food they’re putting into their bodies, with likely no excessive caloric intake. Higher fat and protein diets have greater satiety – if you feel full, you are less likely to eat too much.” “In counting carbs vs. proteins vs. fats, you are paying attention to the quality of foods you consume, eating fewer processed foods, which is generally healthier,” he added. “Lastly, you form routines around meals and consumption which are sustained over time and lead to positive changes in weight and sense of well-being.”

New Delhi: A keto diet is one of the most popular diets for weight loss. Recently, with bloggers and social media influencers talking a lot about their experiences with a keto diet, many people have been wanting to try it. Though slightly restrictive, the diet sounds way more practical and convenient in practice than other diets.

While most people are aware that you are supposed to cut down on carbs on a keto diet and increase the intake of fats, very few people are aware of how exactly does that help in losing weight. It is important to understand what a certain diet or workout routine is doing to your body, to know if it suits your routine and lifestyle and if you should actually practice it or not.

Ketosis a process that occurs in your body when there are not enough carbohydrates provided to the body to burn them for energy. It is a metabolic state which increases the levels of ketone bodies in the body tissues. When the body is on the process of ketosis, it burns fat and makes ketones in the body, which it then uses for fuel. Ketosis is often used in relation to diabetes and weight loss.

Not only does the keto diet help you burn fat for energy, but it also helps in making you feel less hungry, which helps in losing weight. It also helps to maintain muscle, as the consumption of protein in a keto diet is considerably high.

How do you know your body is in ketosis and the keto diet is working?

It can be very difficult to understand if your body is actually in the process of ketosis or not and if the keto diet for weight loss is really working, especially if you are new and trying the diet for the first time. You should know that for healthy people, who do not have conditions like diabetes, and for women who are not pregnant, the process of ketosis should begin in 3-4 days when it is not receiving more than 50 g carbs a day. The body can also be put on a process of ketosis by fasting.

The ketogenic diet and the process of ketosis can prove beneficial to people who suffer from health conditions like metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc. It helps to increase the levels of good cholesterol in the body, better than any other moderate carb-intake diet. The keto diet also helps lose weight, which could be the real reason behind the positive effect of the diet on these health conditions.

The ketogenic diet promises to promote weight loss by significantly reducing your carb intake and fats in the body. However, some people said the approach failed to help them achieve their desired weight despite months of restricted diet. Why?

This low-carb, high-fat diet encourages people to limit their carb intake. The keto diet focuses on more calories from protein and fat.

Carbs are known for its impact on weight so reducing it should really help you shed some pounds. Keto has been proven effective not just for weight loss but for treating health conditions too, such as epilepsy.

On average, a person should see the effects of keto diet on weight in the first three to six months. This approach promotes a faster fat burning process compared to other diets since it uses more calories to change fat into energy than carbs.

To those who failed to lose some weight, there could be other factors that affected how your body utilized fats and carbs. Your lifestyle, not keto, possibly failed you.

Things To Avoid While On Keto Diet

Poor Fat Intake

Fat plays an important role on the positive effects of keto diet. This approach uses fat to promote weight loss.

Getting the right amounts of fats should give you enough energy and support your hormone function and metabolism. Healthy fat source include animal fats, olive oil and monounsaturated fats.

High Consumption Of Dairy

Dairy products are low-carb and high-fat foods, which means they are good options for keto followers. However, avoid too much consumption of these products since they could give more sugar and ruin your diet plan.

Lack Of Water

Water can help manage appetite. It can make you feel fuller even after eating a small portion. Lack of water in the body could slow down metabolism, which may affect how fats are burned while on keto diet.

Sleep Problems

Aside from what you put in your stomach, the keto diet’s effects also rely on what you do to your body. Lack of sleep at night affects the production of ketone in the body and makes you crave for sugary food or drinks.

Unhealthy Snacking

Keto diet is known for its satisfying effect, which means you should eat less after a meal. A sign that your diet plan is not working is when you eat too much snacks during the day, which could lead to excess calories in your body.

Ketogenesis, the body process behind one of the biggest current diet trends, promises major, easy weight loss if you can just cut out one food group—carbohydrates.

The ketogenic diet (nicknamed “keto”) is named for a state in which the body, starved of energy-efficient carbs, turns to other things for fuel—hopefully burning stores of fat. The low-carb lifestyle has been around for a while, but whereas diets like Atkins emphasized protein consumption, keto ups the amount of fats dieters eat.

The diet has now become so popular that food companies are creating products—even full meals—to allow dieters to maintain the low-carb, high-fat eating plan.

In the short-term, “people are loving it,” says Sarasota dietitian Rebecca Henson, who has worked with a lot of “keto dropouts,” as she calls them. “They can have all the butter and the sour cream, all the oils—but they cannot eat carbohydrates.”

But Henson points out that there’s a dearth of studies on the long-term effects of the keto diet, and what we do know about it is, scientifically speaking, not great.

For one thing, there’s no way of knowing if a body in ketosis will focus on burning stored fat as opposed to other possible backup fuels, including muscle. Losing muscle means your weight will go down, but so will your metabolism. If you’re only doing keto on a temporary basis, you’ll be less equipped to burn energy when you go back to a normal diet.

And scientists have been unable to demonstrate the long-term effects of maintaining ketosis because, in part, study subjects haven’t been able to stay on the diet for more than a year. “Carbs make people happy,” Henson admits.

But a life without pizza is just one discouraging consequence. In addition to lethargy, ketosis can produce unpleasant body odor and bad breath—symptoms also seen in people with eating disorders like anorexia. In ketosis, “Your body is essentially eating itself,” says Henson. “It’s like when you go into a starvation state and your body is not using normal fuel.”

Henson, who did her master’s thesis on the Atkins diet, points out that carb cravings aren’t innately unhealthy. “When we did a feeding study, everybody hated [the Atkins diet],” she says of her post-graduate research. “These were obese subjects, but in the end what they really missed was fruit. They just wanted to eat some healthy carbohydrates.”

Rather than dieting, Henson preaches wholesale but manageable lifestyle changes that balance healthy eating with overall happiness. While there’s no validity in short-term diets that promise to detoxify or otherwise “reset” the body, she says, two weeks of healthy eating can make people feel so good that they’re less tempted by unhealthy choices.

If you want to do keto, Henson suggests a temporary turn at the diet, maybe for three weeks, emphasizing vegetables in addition to the fats. But that’s a big “if.” Asked straight-up if she would ever recommend the keto diet, Henson’s answer comes quickly and without reservation: “No.”

The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for short) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that is in vogue for quite some time now. The diet offers various health benefits and shares many similarities with the Atkins and other low-carb diets, which involve significantly low intake of carbs and replacing it with good fat.

This reduction in carbohydrates puts our body into a metabolic state, known as ketosis. Usually, our bodies need glucose for sustainability, and glucose is produced when our body breaks down carbs. But in keto diet, when we cut back on carbs, it looks for other energy sources to fill the gap. Fat is that energy source that our body uses as its second best choice for energy.

Since one of the amazing health benefits of keto diet is that it facilitates weight loss and helps manage it, a lot of people have adopted keto diet in an attempt to lose weight fast and efficiently. However, if you are on keto diet or planning to start with it, you must get all your facts right and consult your nutritionist. We often tend to make silly mistakes while we are on keto diet; we try to accommodate keto diet in our routine rather than adjusting our lifestyle according to it.

To help us avoid doing mistakes on keto diet, famous YouTube chef, Sahil Makhija, has laid down a few common mistakes to avoid while you are on keto diet.
