Plastic surgery in the past was an option most often associated with adults, especially older adults, who desired to improve their appearance. But the number of teenagers undergoing plastic surgery is trending upward.

Nearly 230,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients from the ages of 13 to 19 in 2017, according to American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Doctors said part of the reason is due to the social media explosion, but they add that it’s also to fix a feature that makes teens a target of bullying, or to address a health need.

Parents can be faced with a quandary: Is the type of plastic surgery their teen wants appropriate or safe for their age?

“It’s very important that a parent know their child’s motive for plastic surgery and that they consult with the surgeon to ensure they are age-appropriate for the particular procedure,” said Dr. Dennis Schimpf, a plastic surgeon, author of “Finding Beauty: Think, See And Feel Beautiful”, and founder of Sweetgrass Plastic Surgery.

“The family needs to be aware of the risks involved and be honest about why they are seeking the surgery. Is it because their child wants to look like a movie or TV star, compete with their appearance on social media, or because they’re getting teased at school?

“Parents and the surgeon must determine the psychological and social impact the teen is feeling and factor that into the equation. There are procedures that are very helpful to teens from that perspective, but there are others that don’t have enough research to be proven age-appropriate.”

Some plastic surgeries or appearance procedures teens should stay away from, Dr. Schimpf said, include breast enlargements, liposuction and injectables, such as Botox or fillers for lip or cheek enhancement.

Dr. Schimpf reviewed the following procedures for teens that may be acceptable and helpful depending on the situation.

•Rhinoplasty. This is nose reshaping, which is the most common plastic surgery for teens. It’s often performed due to a child being teased at school for having a big nose. Most doctors recommend waiting on surgery until the teenager’s nasal growth is complete, which is usually between the ages of 16-18 in males and 15-16 in females.

“This surgery may provide a major improvement for teens, helping them psychologically as well as with confidence in their appearance,” Dr. Schimpf said.

•Breast reduction. Performed on teen girls to take away back and neck pain. Doctors emphasize the importance of waiting to do the surgery until the patient has finished breast development, which can be as late as 19 years-old.

•Otoplasty. This is performed for those with ear deformities or large ears, another subject of school mocking. The problem can be corrected by surgery early, sometimes at age 5, because the ear is almost fully grown at that point.

•Noninvasive procedures. Common procedures requested by teens include skin procedures such as microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels.

“These improve the overall appearance of the skin, like diminishing acne scars,” Dr. Schimpf said.

“A lot of parents are scared of plastic surgery and the messages it sends to young people,” Dr. Schimpf said. “Being open and honest with a board- certified, credible surgeon is always beneficial. And, any conscious surgeon will listen to parents’ concerns regarding the well-being of their child.”

Dennis Schimpf is a fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS), as well as a member of American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS).

What to perform general, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, and ENT surgeries.

Indore: Excited by the move of the government which allowed Ayurveda practitioners to perform various procedures including general surgeries, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, ENT and dental procedures, Madhya Pradesh State Dental Council also appealed to the government to allow the same to the dentists as well.

President of the council Dr Deshraj Jain said that the decision for allowing dentists to perform various procedures are pending due to Covid-19 and the decision should be taken by the government soon to facilitate the people in the time of crisis.

“Dental education is similar to MBBS as the students were taught and trained by the experts of medical colleges for various subjects like anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology. After getting a degree of BDS and MDS, dentists also become trained for performing such procedures,” Dr Jain said in a press conference.

The council officials also stated that dentists are playing an important role in managing Covid crisis.

“Madhya Pradesh has 10,088 registered dentists with the council and they are working in various hospitals and in testing to manage the Covid crisis. Dentists can fill the gap created due to the scarcity of doctors across the country,” member of council Dr Surendra Agrawal said.

IMA protesting against government decision

Indian Medical Association is protesting against the government decision of allowing Ayurveda practitioners to perform various procedures. In a gazette notification by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) listed 39 general surgery procedures and around 19 procedures involving the eye, ear, nose, and throat by amending the Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016.

“The Council has the dubious reputation of prescribing modern medical text books to its students. IMA exhorts the Council to develop their own surgical disciplines from their own ancient texts and not claim the surgical disciplines of modern medicine as their own. Such a deviant practice is unbecoming of a statutory body.” President of IMA Indore Dr Satish Joshi said.

He added that they see this development as a retrograde step of mixing the systems which will be resisted at all costs.

HOUSTON – A nose job without the knife and no recovery downtime? There is a new way to change the shape of your nose without having to go through surgery. A “liquid nose job” is growing in popularity because of the ease and affordability so we wanted to see how it works.

“I have such a heavy insecurity about the beak I have,” said Valerie Espinoza. “I have this hump on my nose, it’s my side profile that I can’t stand.”

For as long as 23-year-old Valerie Espinoza can remember, she has worried about the look of her nose.

“Since I was younger maybe even elementary, I’ve been like, ‘I need to get this fixed,’” she said. “I want it to look more proportional with my face, not so sticking out.”

She didn’t want to go through painful surgery and recovery that could take weeks. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sanaz Harirchian said Espinoza is a great candidate for the liquid nose job.

“Liquid rhinoplasty is really good for camouflaging humps, building up a ridge, lifting a tip, adding hight to a bridge, filling little irregularity,” said Harirchian from My Houston Surgeons.

In the procedure, doctors inject fillers into certain areas of the nose to change the shape.

“It’s really the ultimate optical illusion in this procedure,” Harirchian said. “There is no downtime and they can walk in and leave the office 15 minutes later and have a new nose, feel more confident in their skin.”

Would a liquid nose job work for me?

You might not be the right candidate for a liquid nose job if your main complaint is the width of your nose. Fillers would not work to camouflage that complaint. For Espinoza, Harirchian did a consultation to see if this procedure would work for her.

“I’m ready to do this,” said an excited Espinoza.

Harirchian decided to also add a little filler to her chin.

“It’s all about balance,” Harirchian said.

The results

The results of the liquid nose job equal a noticeable difference in the way Espinoza looks.

“Oh my gosh! I’m shaking right now. It looks good! I love it!” said Espinoza. “I would rather take this procedure. If you do an actual rhinoplasty, there is downtime. This is just a quick fix and you can see results right away.”

Espinoza said the procedure is practically painless.

“There was just some minor pinching so nothing extreme,” she said. “They put numbing cream on before so you really didn’t feel anything.”

Harirchian said the results last about 12 to 18 months.

“I have patients who come in every year or every few years for (a) touchup,” the doctor said. “A little bit lasts, so you can keep building on that, so I see patients year after year and every time it keeps getting better and better.”

How much does it cost?

Depending on where you go, it will cost you about $1,000. Also, you don’t want to go to just anyone who does fillers. Because of the delicate areas on the face, you need someone who is experienced.

A way of making a person’s voice better reflect their gender

Voice surgery for transgender individuals may be an option for individuals who experience dysphoria about their voice and have not been helped enough by the practice of voice therapy.

Purpose

Voice therapy can be helpful for people who are learning to speak in a way that is read as more masculine or feminine. It can also help people, to a degree, make their speaking voices sound a certain way. However, it does not adjust the fundamental pitch of the speaking voice.

Voices are, quite literally, the first way that most people communicate with the world. Whether talking on the phone or calling out to a friend across the room, our voices are a big part of how we are perceived.

Indeed, many of the assumptions we make about people’s identities reflect our perceptions of the way they speak.
What about a person’s voice is associated with gender? Although we think of women as having higher voices than men, pitch is only the most obviously gendered aspect of the voice.
This may be particularly true for women who spend a lot of time using their voice—like teachers, or phone support providers—because being repeatedly misgendered can take an emotional toll. Vocal surgery may also have the potential to reduce the risk of other forms of transphobia and discrimination.

A 67-year-old man showed two scars on each side of his chest. Both were left by lung cancer surgeries, which also shows the development of medical technology and theories, doctors said on Tuesday, the International Lung Cancer Day.

The left side, which received a traditional lung cancer surgery eight years ago, left the man a 25-centimeter scar and poor memory due to complications left by anesthesia and surgery.

The man surnamed Mei said he had planned to forgo a second surgery after another suspicious nodule was found on his right side in 2018. “I was so afraid of the sickness and suffering from the previous surgery and I would rather die than receive another one,” he said.

But under the guidance of doctors, Mei went to Shanghai Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, which conducted a minimally invasive surgery with acupuncture anesthesia early this year.

The procedure left only a 3-centimeter scar without any complication, as acupuncture and medicine were combined with anesthesia without tracheal intubation developed by the hospital, which is the nation’s largest medical center for carrying out acupuncture anesthesia, to help patients better endure surgery. They also suffer less trauma and potential complications from anesthesia and enjoy a quicker recovery.

Dr Chen Tongyu, director of Yueyang’s cardiothoracic surgery department, said acupuncture anesthesia is a special anesthetic measure supporting surgery, as it can sedate, control pain, stabilize circulation and protect organs. No intubation is used in the surgery and the use of anesthesia medicine is reduced under the effects of acupuncture.

“About 60 to 70 percent of our patients adopt such anesthesia,” he said. “They can wake up quickly and eat and drink soon after the surgery. The hospitalization time is only three day, compared to the traditional five days, and the medical bill is one third less due to reduced use of medicines and quicker recovery.”

With the prevalence of CT scans and people’s rising awareness of lung cancer, more and more lung cancer cases are detected in early stage. “We are adopting a theory called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, or ERAS, for patients’ smaller trauma and quicker recovery,” he said. “Acupuncture anesthesia is an important tool to help achieve ERAS. Through acupuncture anesthesia and minimally invasive technology, we have entered an ear of super minimally invasive surgery.”

Officials urge caution with cold-storage, imported food

Local health authorities are calling on the public to be cautious of cold-storage foods, especially imported foods, after confirmed cases of coronavirus contamination involving such items.

Shoppers are recommended to go to official supermarkets and wet markets, and pay attention to the origins of their food, as well as inspection information on imported food.

Avoiding direct hand contact with frozen food and wearing disposable gloves and masks is suggested. Using separate packages for food and keeping raw and cooked food in different parts of the refrigerator are also useful to prevent the spread of the virus, said Shanghai Health Promotion Center.

Officials also warn residents of receiving goods from high-risk regions. Using disposable gloves, disinfecting packages and hand washing are important.

Proper hand washing is the most effective measure for infectious disease prevention and control and self awareness is important, officials said.

French twin brothers Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff were hugely popular on French television during the 1980s thanks to their boyish good looks

There’s no denying that cosmetic procedures can completely transform someone’s appearance, and that seems to be the case with the Bogdanoff twins.

Igor and Grichka, 71, look unrecognisable nowadays – compared to when they first found fame on French television back in the 1970s.

The brothers – who were raised by their maternal grandmother in her castle in southern France – reportedly had their first round of plastic surgery in the 1990s.

Although they were once known for their good looks, the duo are now barely recognisable.

In 2010 it was reported that Igor and Grichka had both had a number of chin and cheek implants, as well as Botox and fillers.

As a result, the siblings have regularly been called “freakish” and described as “cat people” by the media.

Some of their fans to this day believe they are suffering from acromegaly – a serious medical condition linked with pituitary gland disorder which makes bones of the skull and extremities increase in size.

According to US statistics, the number of males having plastic surgery has steadily increased.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual report for 2019 says 18.1 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States alone last year.

This compares with 13 million in 2011, and the top five procedures were breast augmentation followed by liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping and facelifts.

As well as their changing appearance, Igor and Grichka are also known for being television presenters, producers and scientific essayists.

SHREVEPORT, La. — The most advanced form of breast reconstruction surgery available is the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) Flap Breast Reconstruction surgery and CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier Health System was the first in the region to perform the surgery last November.

DIEP Flap surgery is a microsurgery that requires extensive surgical skill. Dr. Marjorie Chelly performs the surgeries.

“A flap is taken from the abdomen, then we use a microscope to connect the veins and the arteries together,” said Chelly. “And then we shape the tissue that we’ve taken from the abdomen in order to recreate a breast.”

Ebony Gage Spraggins had the DIEP Flap surgery in May.

“They told me they could take a part of my body and recreate breasts. I had never heard of this before,” Spraggins said. “And then they said, tummy tuck, okay, excuse me? So, you’re going to remove the tummy and make me completely fabulous. I was completely in!”

“The ideal patient is usually a woman who’s had a few children who has a little extra abdominal tissue,” explained Chelly. “And because her abdomen has been descending from her pregnancies, and she needs to be an overall good health.”

The surgery is performed by two to three plastic surgeons and can be done at the same time a patient has a mastectomy.

“We have a team approach to the process, and so we can work simultaneously with the breast surgeons,” Chelly said. “And then after they’re done with a mastectomy, we can complete our portion and do it at the same time.”

It is a major surgery and requires significant recovery time. For Spraggins, she was in the hospital for four days. It took a couple of months for her to get back to normal.

“I didn’t realize how much I used the core of my stomach for everything,” said Spraggins. “When I finally decided to slow down and stop being the old Ebony and just lay down and rest and enjoy life, I began to heal a lot quicker.

While the surgery is intense, there are immense benefits.

“They don’t really have to worry about following up with this tissue,” explained Chelly. “You can’t get breast cancer in this tissue because it’s getting fat from your abdomen so you’re not going to regrow tumor in this tissue.”

“I feel amazing. I really do. I feel a difference,” Spraggins said.

Would she recommend this surgery?

“Yes, yes, 100% yes! If you’re removing the bad things, and God is giving you another chance, I would say go for it,” exclaimed Spraggins. “It is so worth it.”

Chelly and the team at CHRISTUS performed their first surgery in November. They are on track to perform 20-25 DIEP Flap surgeries in 2020.

As with anything in life, plastic surgery patients are thrilled when a procedure offers the best results without the hassle. But, when getting a major surgery like a tummy tuck (it’s also known as an abdominoplasty), this kind of convenience can be a lot to ask for. Fortunately, there’s a modernized player to the tummy tuck game that is able to give us the ease we’ve admittedly been so eagerly waiting for.

The drainless tummy tuck, which Concord, CA plastic surgeon Eric Mariotti, MD says “lessens the amount of maintenance patients have to do post-procedure,” is a driving force in his recent uptick in patients: “People really want to know if the results are just as good as they would be with drains, and they’re happy to learn that they really are.”

A drainless tummy tuck is, essentially, exactly what it sounds like: a tummy tuck performed in a way where patients don’t have to deal with the hassle of fluid drains post-operation. The biggest benefit of this improved operation? The recovery process is much easier.

Less seromas
A seroma is a collection of fluids that build up under the skin and cause discomfort after surgery and is highly common after a normal tummy tuck. “In a normal tummy tuck, you need drains to take the fluid of your body so that liquid doesn’t collect in a space and cause a seroma,” says Dr. Mariotti. Once the drains come out, however, is when the fluid may begin to collect.

“In a no-drain technique, we use sutures on the backside of the skin to physically sew the skin down to the muscle, obliterating or closing off that space so there is no room for fluid,” says Dr. Mariotti, adding that his rate of seromas has decreased since he stopped using drains.

Better scars
“With a traditional drain technique, the exit sites of the drain have to heal. The drains are either going to be placed below the scars, so you’ll have a little scar where the drain came out of the skin, or through the scars, which may or may not make the scar worse at that spot,” explains Dr. Mariotti.

Although the drainless technique still leaves a scar, Dr. Mariotti says he has noticed the scars generally have healed nicer than that of a normal tummy tuck. “Since this technique involves sutures on the underside of the skin—a technique called progressive tension—there is much more tension taken off of the scar, which makes them look much thinner and better-looking than they did when I used to do the drain technique.”

A more manageable recovery
Dr. Mariotti explains that the main results are roughly the same with and without drains, but the postoperative period is often easier with the drainless technique.

He notes that the psychology of not having drains in can have a significant impact on a patient’s recovery, as well. “If you look down and you don’t have bloody fluid collecting, a tummy tuck seems like a much smaller procedure,” says Dr. Mariotti. “When it feels like a smaller procedure, you tend to feel like you can get up and move around more, so there’s some psychology of having no drains—patients just tend to get moving quicker without them even though the drains should have no impact on (easy) movement whatsoever.”

“I tell my patients the recovery from a drainless tummy tuck can be faster for a number of reasons. One is they don’t have drains hanging out that they have to empty and take care of all the time. The second reason, which is just as important, is that without the drains patients ofter feel like they can get up and move around more, and sooner, which speeds up the recovery.”

Although normal tummy tucks are just as effective, be sure to ask your provider if a drainless tummy tuck could be a better option for you.

Source – https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/

Real beauty is reflected in your skin. If you want a clearer, younger looking skin, non-surgical cosmetic treatments and some maintenance after that can let you achieve immediately visible and long-lasting results. You don’t have to always undergo cosmetic surgery to improve appearance and reduce the signs of ageing. In fact, you can choose non-surgical cosmetic treatments to reduce wrinkles, plump up your lips, smoothen the surface of your skin. We spoke with Dr. Anup Dhir Senior Consultant, Cosmetic Surgeon, Apollo Hospital, Delhi to know more about non-cosmetic procedures that can bring a drastic change in your appearance and here’s what the doctor had to say.
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments: Broadly, these treatments are of three types. We can use laser and other energy based devices like radiofrequency and ultrasound, we can do injectables like botox, fillers microfat and PRP, or we can do time tested older procedures like chemical peels, dermabrasion and microneedling to rejuvenate the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing for wrinkles is very commonly done with carbon dioxide or erbium fractional laser and helps by removing the top layer of the skin and making it look younger. Laser hair reduction is done with lasers for facial and body hair and normally six sittings are needed at monthly intervals.
Radiofrequency energy devices like thermage, exilis, e matrix etc. and ultrasound devices like HIFU help in formation of new collagen under the skin by directing energy at a particular level under the skin.

Botox injection for wrinkles -This injection is very commonly used for treatment of facial wrinkles and weakens the muscles which cause wrinkles. It has to be repeated after 4-6 months.

Anti-wrinkle treatment by fillers is again a very popular procedure in which hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into scars and wrinkles. The resulting improvement lasts for 9-15 months.

Fat injection for scars and wrinkles are the gold standard for rejuvenation and in this, your own body fat is sucked, processed and injected in the facial wrinkles. Microfat and nanofat are the types of fat which can be used. The fat has its own stem cells and they help to rejuvenate the skin and improve texture and; help in face lift and rejuvenation of hands also.

PRP skin rejuvenation is done by taking your blood and making platelet rich plasma from it and this is injected in the facial skin and it can also be used in the scalp to reduce the hair fall and help in regrowth.

Dermabrasion involves taking the outer layer of skin with a diamond roller under a local anesthetic and the new skin on healing has less scars. The purpose of surgical dermabrasion is to help diminish the appearance of deeper scars and skin imperfections and smoothen the skin.

Chemical peels use a chemical solution to smoothen the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. It is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Superficial peels with fruit acids like glycolic acid etc. are also called lunchtime peels as they have hardly any down time and can give quick results. As sun exposure, acne, or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred, these peels can help these conditions. They also helps to whiten the skin.

Dermaroller and mesotherapy can be done together and while doing it, a skin roller is used on the skin and mesotherapy solution is injected to improve acne scars and treat the wrinkles. Dermaroller can also be used with PRP and nanofat to rejuvenate the skin.

Finally, anti ageing diet rich in antioxidants for healthy skin has a big role to rejuvenate from within. Fruits, multi coloured vegetables, fish, plenty of water etc. are known to make your skin look younger.

Proper care and maintenance of skin is needed to achieve long lasting results. Don’t forget daily use of sunblock SPF30 or above to save your skin from premature ageing due to UV radiation in sun rays. However, you need to consult a cosmetic surgeon to find which method is best suited for your skin type.

Liposuction has been around for some time. It is a minimally invasive cosmetic surgery process that helps to eliminate the unappealing tubby lump layers settled beneath your skin. Its suggested when the fat bulges never respond to stringent diet programs and intense workout sessions. You will have to look for a reliable cosmetic surgeon. The specialist will determine your suitability for a liposuction process, after reviewing your health history.

What steps to take?

First, consult a qualified and veteran cosmetic surgeon. Discuss your needs, options, complications, perks, and costs of liposuction. Never hesitate to ask questions and clear any doubts. Even share details about your allergies, OTC supplements, or herbal medications you are using.

If you are determined to go for the process, then the doctor will instruct you about what preparations to make before the surgery. It includes changes in your diet along with alcohol and smoking cessations. Even specific medications like painkillers or blood thinners must be avoided several weeks before the scheduled surgery date.

If you reside anywhere near Orlando, then schedule a consultation with Dr. Bassin. Visit their website www.orlandoliposuction.com, and browse through the photo gallery. You will be surprised to see the before & after changes in the body of their past patients. The specialist will give information on the variety of technologies used for body sculpting. The clinic prefers ultrasound-assisted lipo, laser lipo, and hand micro-lipo techniques.

Who is an eligible candidate for liposuction?

The liposuction process does not remove cellulite, so never expect that it will vanish. For liposuction eligibility, you must be healthy, 18 + years, maximum BMI 30, and a firm skin [natural elasticity]. No smoking is also a necessity. People with a compromised immune system, blood flow issues, and heart disorders must never choose the liposuction process.

Treatment areas

• Face – Double chin, cheeks, and jowls

• Upper-body – Upper arm, breasts, and bra-bulge

• Lower-body – Tummy, buttocks, love handles, and saddlebags

What to anticipate during a consultation?

The physical examination allows evaluating the target areas’ adipose layer thickness. A pinch test allows the doctor to get a rough idea of fat cell volume that is safe to get rid of. If the tummy is the specific area to target, then the doctor considers the visceral fat bulk and the chances of hernia development. The skin’s elasticity gets reviewed through manual skin stretching.

The surgeon will also determine whether there is a potential to perform more than one surgical procedure to correct the unpleasant parts. Skin sagging can get corrected with a tummy tuck or thigh lift. The doctor may even recommend a secondary procedure. It will be beneficial for correcting the skin structure’s irregularities after fat gets harvested.

The doctor will even take photographs because it will help in the pre-surgery and post-surgery comparisons. Some tests are associated with the physical condition of the patient. Besides, the nature of targeted areas will also get evaluated. The different forms of tests include imaging, laboratory, prognostic, qualitative, and pinch tests.

The specialist may not approve liposuction in certain areas because of potential problems. You will even learn about port or incision sites. These are locations, where the cannula and a vacuum device that pulls the fat cells get inserted. Several incision spots are essential to lessen the development of curve or shape irregularities.

Some patients desire to have the removed fat cells transferred to other body parts having low volume. It includes the face, hands, buttocks, and breasts. When volumes get added the narrow parts look more beautiful and augmenting. However, fat transfers accompany risks therefore discuss this with your surgeon to know better.

What to anticipate through the liposuction process?

The liposuction surgery procedure gets done at the hospital or a doctor’s clinic. Orlando Clinic is famous for employing strict safety standards and efficient outcomes.

• The operation generally takes a couple of hours. You will get discharged after 8 to 10 hours. Therefore, ensure to bring a friend or family for the surgery, so they can drive you home after you get discharged. In case you have plenty of lipids suctioned, then be prepared to stay overnight.

• An antibiotic is prescribed to be taken one hour before the process to evade bacterial infection.

• Before the patient lies on the operation table, surgical markings with a marker are made on the targeted areas and the port sites.

• The patient is laid on the operation table in an SLD or Supine Lateral Decubitus position. It allows the surgeon to perform the process with ease.

• General and local anesthesia is the two options that will ensure a painless procedure. If you feel uncomfortable, then go for general anesthesia as you will not stay awake to see the procedure.

• The body gets cleaned and laid on a sterile blanket. The target areas get covered with sterilized sheets.

• A small cut is made with a sharp blade. It gets broadened for pre-tunneling, which allows the cannula to get controlled with ease. It even helps to avoid harvesting the sub-dermal chubby layer that can cause contouring deformities.

• Blood vessels get clamped with hemostat [clamp] to avoid heavy blood flow.

• A catheter with a smooth tip gets pushed first with a peristaltic pump.

• Pre-suctioning liquid gets injected.

• The cannula and syringe are connected and inserted inside the fat layers lying deep down. The vacuum is started to loosen and harvest the fat cells.

• Fluids get administered consistently with foot pedals until the surgeon notices uniform skin firmness and distention at the target region.

• Fluid administration gets monitored minutely to evade the chances of overload. This can create fatal complications like fat embolism or pulmonary edema.

• The fat layers lying deep down get treated first and then the superficial stratum gets covered.

• The doctor can increase or decrease the cannula size and suction power based on his/her skills or gut feeling, depending on the patient.

• The cannula is skillfully moved around to and fro to avoid irregular shaping. The surgeon is capable to define when the anticipated result gets accomplished. They pay close attention to the body’s contour and proportion.

• If there is a loss of significant fluid in the process, it gets replaced with an IV. [It is a rare situation]

• The port sites get sutured using absorbable stitches.

• Large incisions are sutured loosely to allow drainage, which stops after two days. The person will then need an absorbable dressing.

• After the surgery gets completed, compression garments like girdles, wraps, or binders, are suggested. It helps to avoid swelling and recover quickly.

• Expect to wear these compression garments for 2 weeks consistently [day and night]. After 2 weeks the compression garments may need adjustment because the swelling got reduced.

Post liposuction care is essential to avoid weight gain

Liposuction removes the fat cells forever. However, if you are not careful new fat cells get amassed in different body parts. So, for new shape preservation, it is essential to consume a balanced diet and keep yourself moving around. Say No, to a sedentary lifestyle and enjoy your healthy slim body for years!

Dr. Kelly: I want to use my time off from work to get some cosmetic surgery done. I saw a surgeon who said he could do a breast lift with implants at the same time as an abdominoplasty and liposuction of the back, hips, and thighs. He said the surgery will take about 8 hours. Do you think it is a good idea to do that much surgery in one setting? I really want to do it all at once.

Response. I would definitely NOT recommend doing all of that surgery at one time. The primary reason is that the risks of complications are greatly increased once surgery lasts longer than 6 hours. One study showed that the risks of pneumonia, heart problems and fever increase 18-36% for each hour of surgery over 6 hours.

In addition, an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) has an inherently higher risk for DVT and PE (blood clots to legs and lungs) than other cosmetic surgery procedures. This is because the abdominal muscle tightening that occurs during the procedure initially slows the return of blood from the legs after surgery and that slowing of blood flow raises the risk of a clot forming.

In my practice, we do the following to make surgery safer: 1. When I do an abdominoplasty, it takes me about two hours to do the surgery and I don’t combine it with other procedures. 2. When I do combine procedures other than abdominoplasty, I aim to complete the operation within 4 hours and never go over six hours. 3.

We screen patients for their risk of DVT and treat patients with blood thinners after surgery if they are at increased risk.

The safe way to do multiple procedures is to break them up and do them separately. I usually ask patients to wait 6 weeks between procedures to reduce the risks of complications. While cosmetic surgery is important, and truly helps patients feel better about themselves; it is still elective surgery that doesn’t have to be done.

Given that perspective, both surgeons and patients should strive to make sure that it is done as safely as possible.
