“Reading the letters made me realize who they were,” Madeleine Fugate, 14, tells PEOPLE

At just 13, Madeleine Fugate could feel her anger grow as she watched yet another TV news station reporting the numbers of COVID-19 cases rising in the United States last spring.

“They aren’t just numbers — they are real people who had lives, jobs, families and friends, a pet,” Madeleine, now 14, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

Her outrage led to a realization: “We have to remember them.”

She began her COVID memorial quilt in April 2020 as her seventh-grade Community Action Project through Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California. It has since exploded into an open-ended endeavor to record the worldwide losses to the ubiquitous virus.

Madeleine’s mother Katherine Fugate provided the inspiration for the COVID quilt after telling her daughter about working on the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt 35 years ago.

“You had someone’s actual shirt or jeans and that made them real to us,” Katherine says. “That struck her how much we needed them to be recognized.”

RELATED: The AIDS Quilt Comes Home: The Inside Story of a Memorial Sewn to Show America ‘People Were Dying’

Madeleine and her mom began reaching out to people through social media, asking for submissions. Contributors could either send completed squares or materials for Madeleine to make the squares.

With the help of her textile class teacher Wendy Wells, Madeleine — who has been sewing since she was 5 — began constructing the panels with 25 commemorative squares, each measuring 8 inches wide by 8 inches long. The size is a symbol of infinity and, as Madeleine says, “that energy keeps going.”

Each piece of fabric comes with a letter about the people behind the squares, recognizing one of the 384,804 lives, and counting, lost to COVID.

“Reading the letters made me realize who they were,” Madeleine says.

Jay Bushman sent a square with an iron-on transfer photo of his father David, 76. It was made of his dad’s T-shirt that featured stirring words from his favorite Star Trek episode: “Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”

“My father was the kindest person I’ve ever known,” says Jay, 48.

The episode, from the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, is “about family, community and loss — and about how if someone is remembered, they will never be truly gone,” says Jay.

Two side-by-side panel squares represent Betty Oshiro, of Paramount, California, and her son Eric, of Mirada, California. He caught the virus from her, and they died at 89 and 61, respectively.

Lori Oshiro, Eric’s wife, also caught COVID from her mother-in-law but survived. She hopes the quilt will help people remember times when the country came together during a crisis.

“I go back to 9/11, when everyone turned to each other,” says Lori. “It was not Democrat or Republican, it was the United States as one.”

“The White House, the people in different states and communities — everyone came together and there was no division,” Lori adds. “So I hope what this quilt project does, like the AIDS Quilt did, is bring people together by showing people’s grief, anger and despair in one beautiful piece of art.”

So far Madeleine has stitched more than 125 squares into five large quilt panels that she hopes to have displayed around the country — one is already promised to an upcoming exhibit at L.A.’s California Science Center.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin today said soon after the victim received an injection from the beautician, she suffered breathlessness and turned pale.

He said the beautician called for an ambulance and the victim was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead by doctors.

Saiful said the 49-year-old beautician and her 23-year-old daughter were arrested following the incident and are being held under a remand order.

He said initial investigations revealed that although the beauty centre was a legally registered business, it was not endorsed by the relevant authorities to perform liposuction procedures.

Saiful said the staff purportedly went ahead with the treatment after being persuaded by the victim.

He said the case in being investigated for causing death by negligence under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code.

Investigators are waiting for a post-mortem and toxicology report to ascertain what had caused the woman’s death.

Source: walesonline.co.uk

A woman went through an artificial menopause at the age of 19 to help treat her painful condition.

Student nurse Kia Morne, now 21, suffers with endometriosis.

It’s a gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other areas of the body, most commonly, but not exclusively in the pelvic region.

This tissue responds to hormones in the same way as the lining of the womb but, with no outlet, it can cause inflammation, scarring and adhesions, leading to severe pain and many other symptoms.

Kia started having symptoms when she was 14, before her periods came at 15, when she suffered with abdominal pain, nausea and bowel problems.

She began fainting a year later, due to heavy bleeding during her period.

Over time doctors misdiagnosed Kia with food poisoning, allergies and irritable bowel syndrome.

The classic symptoms of endometriosis include severe pain during or between periods, very long, heavy and irregular periods, bowel and bladder problems, back and leg ache, and pain during or after sex.

Extreme fatigue is very common and fertility may also be affected. Misdiagnosis is common, resulting in delays to accurate diagnosis, unnecessary tests, and sometimes unnecessary surgery.

But Kia was finally diagnosed when she was 19 after switching to a female GP and undergoing keyhole surgery called a laparoscopy.

“There are many misdiagnoses, so I felt a sigh of relief that my illness finally had a name,” said Kia.

She added: “Suffering with endometriosis is a continual struggle.

“You feel embarrassed the condition is to do with your periods, then you have to be believed and then you have to be diagnosed.”

In a trial and error treatment routine Kia was first put on the contraceptive pill, but it did not help her symptoms.

She was then given a course of injections that brought on a medically-induced menopause.

The use of these drugs is usually limited to six months because of the side effect of thinning of the bone, Endometriosis UK say.

The injections are GnRH analogues, with brands including Prostap and Zolodex, which are synthetic hormones that bring on a temporary menopause.

The ovaries switch off and temporarily stop producing eggs and the hormone oestrogen.

Kia felt the treatment’s full force of side effects – hot sweats, dizziness, headaches, mood changes, hair loss, bone and joint pain, skin reactions, sleep issues, fatigue, nausea, memory issues, blurred vision, bloating and swelling.

She also has hormone replacement therapy to help alleviate some of the side effects.

The only way to determine if a person has endometriosis is through a laparoscopy and excision is widely seen as the gold standard for treating endometriosis, where the disease is cut out.

Kia has now decided to have the surgery and she also wants to freeze her eggs for the future.

“It is odd to be thinking of children when it is something that I’d think about so far in the future,” she said.

Endometriosis does not necessarily cause infertility but there is an association with fertility problems, although the cause is not fully established. Even with severe endometriosis, natural conception is still possible.

Menstruation is a monthly series of changes that happen in the body of the woman in preparation for conception. An egg matures in the ovaries and is released in a process called ovulation. At the same time, the lining of the uterus, the endometrium grows to prepare for implantation. When fertilisation does not occur, this lining sheds off as menstrual blood. If there is more than seven days’ lag in your period, it is not regular.
Vanessa Namakula has for the past two years suffered extreme menstrual bleeding. The businesswoman says: “Sometimes, I do not get my period for about four months and when it comes, it is extremely heavy and lasts six days.”

Normal period

A normal period is supposed to be regular and cyclic that you are aware of when the next one will come, says Dr Ndozire Jnr, a gynaecologist at Mildmay Hospital.
He adds that a period is not supposed to be so heavy that it disrupts one’s health (80ml of blood per day). Your menstrual period should be a maximum of seven days but can last for a day or three as long as it is cyclic.
Extreme of menstruation is charaterised by variations such as heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, and irregular ones. Dr Ndozire advises that one goes to see a gynaecologist if they are experiencing any of these variations.

Heavy bleeding

This is when a woman loses a lot of blood or the bleeding lasts more than seven days and may cause other conditions such as anaemia. In such cases, the woman might also have blood clots.
The major causes of heavy bleeding are masses in the uterus, fibroids, polyps and using the Inter Uterine Device (IUD).
“Some women who use the IUD experience heavy bleeding, especially in the first three months but this normalises thereafter. Also, if you have missed your period for some time, the next period is likely to be heavy because the endometrial layer that sheds off is bigger,” Dr Ndozire says.

Painful bleeding

Dr Ndozire says a number of adolescent girls and those getting their period for the first time usually have a painful one. He, however, adds that this is normal if the pain is tolerable. It is known as primary dysmenorrhoea when a woman experiences cramping in the lower abdomen before or during menstruation but there is no particular cause for the pain. It is prevalent among adolescents but can also affect adults.
Dr Ndozire says secondary dysmenorrhoea is when there is a particular cause for the painful menstruation and this may be due to endometriosis, a condition where the tissue of the uterus (endometrium) grows in other places such as the fallopian tubes or ovaries. The presence of fibroids can also be another reason for painful menstrual bleeding.
Painful periods are treated with non-steroidal drugs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac while women whose menstrual pain is caused by endometriosis might need surgery to remove the ectopic endometrium.
He says: “The uterus can be removed for those women who have attained the required family size but suffer from extremely painful periods due to endometriosis. Scarring of the endometrium using electricity can also be done but here, a woman will be unable to have any more children.”

Irregular menstruation

Menstruation is a monthly cycle and an irregular period happens because you do not ovulate in some months according to Dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynaecologist at Kawempe General Hospital.
“There are conditions that may cause one not to ovulate and the commonest is polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is when a woman has a hormonal imbalance with an excess of the male hormone.
This imbalance prevents the development and release of mature eggs and without a mature egg, neither ovulation or pregnancy can occur,” Dr Kiggundu says adding that treatment depends on the cause of the problem.

Intermenstrual bleeding

Dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynaecologist at Kawempe General Hospital, says intermenstrual bleeding is when one has their normal period but bleeds in between their cycle. The bleeding may be coming from the vagina due to a polyp in the vagina or cervix, especially if the cervix is changing into a cancer.
He says, “The blood can also come from the endometrium which may be bigger than normal (hyperplasia). Also endometrial cancer can cause bleeding between periods as well as trauma such as rape.”

Hayley Lloyd, 44, from Caerphilly, gained weight after having children and in 2001 reached her heaviest weight of almost 19 stone.

She decided to lose weight and joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) and lost four stones – but despite this achievement, she disliked the impact that being overweight had done to her body.

“With pregnancies and being overweight, the skin had stretched and was loose”, she added.

She had told her husband that having a tummy tuck would give her the confidence she needed.

In January 2019, with her children grown up, there was now time and money to pursue this dream and a tummy tuck operation was booked.

“I spoke to my surgeon who told me I needed to be within a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) to get the best results, as the operation was not a weight loss solution,” she said.

“I set myself a goal to lose three-and-a-half stones by the summer, as that was when I had set my mind to have the operation”.

Hayley therefore joined the WW Workshop in Caerphilly, weighing in at 14 stone 9lb. Soon the weight was dropping off and Hayley was feeling much better about herself.

She credits the flexible eating plan at WW for never making it feel like she was on a diet and in July 2019, reached her goal weight of 11st 1lb by losing a total of 3 stone 8lb, and underwent the tummy tuck operation two weeks later.

“I am now proud of my body. My confidence has rocketed, and I am able to get undressed with the light on. I wish I had done this for myself years ago.

“This is all thanks to WW who gave me the support I needed to succeed on my weight loss journey to find myself again”.

The very thought of a surgery gone wrong is a nightmare in itself. A 32-year-old mom of three waded through a similar misery at the start of the New Year. Abigail Fernandez, who hails from Newquay, Cornwall signed up for a tummy tuck surgery in Tunisia, which almost cost her life.

Fernandez, who seemed to have body image issues post the delivery of her children, admitted to going under the knife to get back in shape. While most cosmetic surgeries are expensive, Fernandez came across a cheaper alternative via an advert. The procedure which costs about 10,000 euros in the UK, seems to have cost only 2,500 euros in Tunisia. Soon after, Fernandez called up the clinic which flooded her with information, including how she’d recover in a five-star hotel post-surgery. She wanted a breast lift as well but stuck to just the tummy lift owing to budget constraints.

But, much to her dismay, things seemed a little amiss right from the start. Far from what it looks like at a star hotel, the accommodation offered bore a dilapidated appearance—the tiles were broken, the floor was dirty and the bedsheets were dirty. And, the horror had just begun. The clinic, however, seemed spotless. She went ahead with the surgery which lasted for about four hours. When she woke up, she felt just fine. But, the next morning was far from what she imagined.

“My body felt like it was on fire and I begged nurses for painkillers,” said Fernandez, while recollecting the nightmare.

“They told me I was being discharged that day, I was horrified,” she added.

The staff finally agreed to let her stay for one more day after Fernandez alleged that she was unable to move. Despite the pain having persisted the next day, Fernandez was discharged by the hospital staff the very next back and dropped back into the same hotel.

On her return, Fernandez remembers feeling dizzy and her vision was blurry. And well, her tummy had swollen to the size of a basketball. What unfolded in the next couple of days were plain ghastly. A green puss-like liquid oozed out of her tummy. While repeated attempts were made to bring this to the clinic staffs’ notice, they overlooked it and termed the condition as “normal.”

Unable to take it any longer, Fernandez was rushed to the doctor after being in acute pain. The excruciating pain was so bad, that she had to call for an ambulance.

At the hospital, doctors examined her condition only to discover that swelling was due to a hematoma – a clot of blood that had formed outside of Abigail’s blood vessels. The swelling was eventually busted and revealed that if she had left it longer, it could’ve cost Fernandez her life. The young mother was hospitalized for four weeks and the infection was cut out to stop it from spreading.

Currently, her stomach bears a nine-inch scar. She will also have to shell out 3000 euros to repair the damage in a specialty hospital in the UK. And, yes, she has a word of advice for all the young women out there: “Don’t go for surgery abroad, I wish I hadn’t. It seemed like I was getting a good deal, but I’ve paid a high price.”

Do your breasts no longer look the way they used to? Do you wish there was a way to improve the sagginess without having to go through surgery? This new procedure might be your answer!

A traditional surgical breast lift is a procedure that normally requires general anesthesia, downtime and leaves the patient many times with unsightly scars around the nipples. The “scarless breast lift” is an ingenious state – of – the – art procedure that lifts sagging breast tissue. The revolutionary Inmode bodytite radiofrequency technology utilizes heat and radiofrequency wave length to stimulate tissue tightening and collagen production. It is all done under local anaesthesia.

It is also “scalpel – free”, and therefore patients will never develop scars.

The best candidate is a woman with bra cup size no larger than a D and mild to moderate sagging tissue. Also, a good candidate would be a woman who wants to restore the shape of their breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding or a woman who wants to have a more lifted breast silhouette and retain firmness despite the natural aging process.

During the procedure the breast tissue is numbed with local anesthesia and the InMode bodytite cannula is inserted under the skin. The cannula delivers highly controlled radiofrequency energy under and on top of the skin which very effectively tightens breast tissue and thereby elevates the breast.

Patients may experience bruising and may have tenderness for about a week. Patients are required to wear a sports bra for 4-6 weeks in order to optimize the effectiveness of tissue shrinkage. Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately after, and exercise can be resumed after 1 week.

Patients like the fact that they can avoid the risk of general anesthesia, scaring, as well as prolonged downtime.

Please stay tuned for my next article on scar less labiaplasty.

An Australian woman has opened up about how being overweight ruined her sex life – and how she lost a staggering 63kg to change her life.

Kaitlyn Gonzalez, 27, from One Mile, NSW, developed an unhealthy relationship with food as a child – often skipping breakfast and eating regular McDonald’s meals.

As an adult she tipped the scales at 145kg – a size 22 – and was often reduced to tears by her reflection.

“Being 145kg was hard, but I was in denial about it. I honestly didn’t realise how big I actually was,” Kaitlyn said.

“Whenever I saw myself on security cameras or in windows walking past shops, I felt my stomach sink. I would look at myself and cry, feeling depressed and like I wasn’t worth being treated right because I mistreated myself.”

Explaining the toll her weight took on her life, Kaitlyn said it affected her in many ways.

“I couldn’t run, I wouldn’t wear skirts as my thighs rubbed so badly they would bleed, I wouldn’t go shopping with friends, I couldn’t ride a rollercoaster and I even struggled putting on socks and shoes,” she said.

“Although it didn’t cause extreme issues in my love life I was limited to one position because other positions hurt my knees and I worried about my stomach touching them.

“When I went to a uni day I remember standing there and a guy about ten metres away pointed at me and yelled ‘oh my god, she’s so fat!’ I cried but thankfully he did apologise after. I’ve also had men tell me they would date me if I wasn’t so big,” she added.

“I was always going out with my tiny and pretty friend and all the boys wanted her, I got no attention and felt out of place. I literally woke up one morning and said I’m done with being fat and I booked an appointment with my doctor to see a surgeon.”

In May 2017 Kaitlyn chose to have vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery.

But knowing it wasn’t a miracle cure, she put a large emphasis on fitness after that and worked out every day.

She also started eating more lean meats and lots of vegetables and within just one year she lost 68kg and now weighs just 77kg and wears a size eight.

Kaitlyn also struggled with excess skin and had two operations to have 3kg removed in February 2019 and a breast lift in October 2019.

Now Kaitlyn shares tips to her friends and family on how she managed to transform her body and life.

“Losing weight has changed my life because if I hadn’t have had the surgery to kick start me, I’d probably have diabetes or be close to dead now. I can walk into any clothing store, pull something off the rack and it fits me. I’m more active, people definitely respond to me better and I get more enjoyment out of every day,” Kaitlyn continued.

“I love how far I’ve come I love how much effort I’ve put in to coming this far. I do still look at myself sometimes and see the bigger girl however I now look in the mirror and be like ‘damn, skinny!’. Every day is different, but I know inside I’ve done so well.

“People are shocked when I tell them how much I’ve lost. They say ‘wow that’s a whole person’ I work in retail and get lots of regular customers who say I look amazing but that they didn’t think I was that big before.

“To those who don’t know where to start, I really suggest thinking about where you want to be. Don’t look at models but do look for people whose shape and fitness levels you like. It’s not going to be about being skinny, but it is about being fit, strong and healthy.”

AMAGASAKI, HYOGO PREF. – A 52-year-old in Hyogo Prefecture has filed a claim challenging the constitutionality of a law that blocks people with children who are minors from changing their sex in the official family registry system maintained by Japanese authorities.

In the claim, filed Tuesday with the Amagasaki branch of the Kobe Family Court, a contract worker with an eight-year-old daughter sought to change her listed sex in the family register from male to female.

The woman has already relinquished custody of the girl. She had sex reassignment surgery this year.

“It’s unreasonable that I can’t change my sex (in the family register) because of my child,” the woman said at a news conference in Amagasaki after filing the claim.

A provision of the special law on gender identity disorder states that in order to change their sex on the family registry, an individual must have no child that is still a minor.

The woman claims that the law provision violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which ensures legal equality for all, and Article 13, which guarantees everyone’s right to pursue happiness.

According to the woman’s lawyer, Shun Nakaoka, such a condition for changing an individual’s listed sex is rarely seen in other countries.

A woman who had her first rhinoplasty when she was just 14 years old has regained her confidence after having a fifth surgery to fix her misshapen ‘pig‘s nose.‘

Erika from Austin, , appeared on Monday night‘s episode of the E! reality series to meet with Dr. Paul Nassif and Dr. Terry Dubrow as a last-ditch effort to get the nose of her dreams.

‘My nose looks bulky, nice and wide, and you can see my nostrils — and I have a huge scar on my left side,‘ she explained in her testimonial.

Scroll down for video

Erika said that she works at her family‘s restaurant and customers would actually come up to her and say her nose ‘looks ugly‘ or ask why she ‘that scar.‘

‘I wanna have pork on my menu, in my restaurant, not on my face,‘ she griped.

She said she never noticed her nose when she was a little girl, but that all changed when her cousin asked her, ‘Why do you have a pig‘s nose?‘

For her ‘sweet 15,‘ she asked her father for a nose job, and while he thought she was ‘crazy,‘ he eventually relented.

Erika was only 14 when her father found her a plastic surgeon in Austin who would perform the surgery.

‘Fourteen is a little bit too young for a girl to have a rhinoplasty,‘ Dr. Nassif told the camera. ‘The minimal age that I will do it is 15, as long as the girl has finished her growth spurt.‘

Two weeks after her surgery, Erika noticed a dent on the right side of her nose. She waited until the summer to go under the knife again for a second surgery.

After the procedure, there was a dent on the other side of her nose, so her father opted to find her another surgeon in Guadalajara, Mexico.

A few weeks after her third rhinoplasty, she noticed that ‘something was popping out‘ and a ‘little scar was appearing.‘

‘We actually called the surgeon and he tried to fix it, but I remember waking up in the middle of the surgery,‘ she recalled. ‘He was actually sewing me up.‘

‘Anesthesia awareness, where you‘re awake and experiencing the surgery, but you‘re paralyzed is one of the most devastating complications in all of anesthesia,‘ Dr. Dubrow explained in his testimonial. ‘It must be avoided at all costs.‘

Erika admitted she was too scared to go back to Guadalajara to ask to get her nose fixed for the fifth time.

‘I have a crooked nose,‘ she told the doctors, noting that she would like it straighter and narrower.

In the examining room, Dr. Nassif had Erika pinch her nostrils to show how narrow she would like her nose to be and then asked her to speak.

The exercise proved that making her nose any slimmer would not only give her a nasal voice, but it would also make it more difficult for her to breathe.

Erika showed the doctor a picture of her mother‘s nose, which is ‘perfect‘ in her eyes. Dr. Nassif finally realized that she wanted her nose to be longer.

‘I see what you want; however, there‘s not a lot of elasticity and stretch with your skin,‘ he told her. ‘When I lengthen a nose and the skin‘s not great, we can compromise the blood supply to the nose. There‘s a risk that the skin over your nose can die.‘

Erika felt like she was in ‘good hands,‘ and readily agreed to a fifth rhinoplasty.

‘If you‘re willing to take the risk, I‘m willing to take the risk,‘ he replied.

Dr. Nassif used rib bone, grafts, and microdermabrasion to reconstruct Erika‘s nose during the surgery, which was a success.

‘I‘ve been having problems with my nose since I was eight years old. I had four surgeries and I still had a pig‘s nose,‘ she said. ‘So, after all these years, I finally have the nose I deserve.

‘You know, I feel like I‘m empowered, and I just feel gorgeous. From today on, it‘s going to be a new Erika.‘

The mom was all smiles when she proudly showed off her new nose to her husband David, her son Mathias, and her longtime friend Jeanette.

‘Thanks to Dr. Nassif, my nose is longer, it‘s more narrow and you can‘t see into,‘ she told the camera.

A woman has opened up about the horrifying moment she was left on the brink of death after having a botched tummy tuck and boob job abroad.

Lyndsay Colosimo, 38, forked out $10,000 for the plastic surgery in Colombia in May in a bid to “feel confident” for her 40th birthday.

But days later, the flesh around Colosimo’s wound and her nipples began rotting, and her skin turned black.

The insurance underwriter was rushed to the hospital, where she was forced to have multiple operations to save her life and rectify her botched surgery.

Colosimo, from Florida, is now warning others about the dangers of having cosmetic surgery abroad following her harrowing ordeal.

“I regret it so much. I went there to feel confident and now I feel embarrassed,” she said.

Colosimo first decided to have the surgery in Colombia after two of her friends went to the same clinic and claimed their results were “amazing.”

“I had a tummy tuck in the US in 2012 and I wasn’t happy with it and wanted it revised with a bum lift,” Colosimo said.

“When I got to the clinic, I was advised on a breast reduction and lift too — something I have always wanted but it wasn’t my priority.

“I decided to have both but I did worry as I felt as though it was too much surgery at once, but you trust the professionals.”

Colosimo was in surgery for five and a half hours before she woke up and everything spiraled out of control.

“When I woke up, I didn’t feel right and a doctor was nowhere to be seen. My legs felt numb and I began vomiting uncontrollably. It was the worst pain of my life,” she described.

“It continued for a few days and I could see a black spot under my bandage, but I was told it was dried blood and not to worry by medics. I knew in my heart it wasn’t as I was getting worse by the day. Eventually, I saw what was under the bandage and 30 percent of my nipple was black.”

Colosimo claims she was diagnosed with necrosis — dead cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or failure of the blood supply — and that her nipple and milk duct was surgically removed three weeks after the initial surgery.

She was scheduled to stay in Colombia for 20 days but went on to stay for a further 12 as she claims there were further complications.

“I had open wounds on my breasts as the implant pocket wasn’t big enough — it is like the incision was made for a C-cup and DD was shoved in,” she said.

“My skin started breaking open, it was terrifying to see. I had a fever and continued to show signs of infections and was encouraged to walk around whereas usually people are told to rest after surgery.

“My stomach began to fill with fluid and puss would seep out of my belly button and massage therapists were sent to my hotel room with razor blades to cut open the incisions and massage the fluids out.

“This is unsanitary and hotel rooms are not sterile environments. Massage oil is also not good near open wounds — I ignored all the red flags as I was desperate for it to make me feel better.

“Unfortunately, I am more educated after the events rather than before. I researched the clinic and seen amazing results with my own eyes, but I didn’t see any of the bad.”

On her return to the US, Colosimo was taken straight to the hospital and claims doctors found an E. coli infection in her breast and told her revision surgery was needed on her stomach.

Following this, she required a wound vac weekly and a doctor to change her bandages daily.

She was finally discharged from their care on November 20.

Colosimo now claims she has a $40,000 medical bill. The initial surgery would have cost $35,000 at a US plastic surgery clinic.

“I went straight to the emergency department and had two more surgeries to install three drains to flush out the infections in my stomach. This infection almost cost me my life — I developed cellulitis and I am still in constant pain at the incision point,” she adds.

“I was seeking perfection but now I look back and realize I was good enough. Before surgery, I wouldn’t wear a bikini and now I won’t even wear a dress or leave my house. I thought I would feel liberated after, but I feel ashamed. I shared my story on social media to prevent other women going through the torture I have been through.”

It’s common to experience some physical discomfort during PMS, but chronic debilitating cramping, lower back pain, and pelvic pain could all be symptoms of a serious condition called endometriosis.

While endometriosis is one of the most common gynecologic conditions, affecting an estimated 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years, it can be a difficult disease to diagnose – so much so that many women living with endometriosis are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed for several years of their adult life.

If you’re suffering every month, understanding the root of your pain may be the first step to getting help, so we reached out to two Ob-Gyns to learn more about painful menstrual cramps associated with endometriosis.

What Is Endometriosis?

Unlike PMS, endometriosis occurs in a woman’s pelvis and surrounding organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and intestines. “Endometriosis is a condition where the same cells that usually line the inner part of the uterus (endometrium), which women shed every month when they have a period, grow outside of the uterus,” Dr. Ann Peters, a gynecologist and surgeon in The Gynecology Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. explained. “In its most severe forms, endometriosis can even invade into these important organs and nerves (similarly to cancer without being cancerous) and cause severe pain.”

How Do Severe Period Cramps Compare to Endometriosis Symptoms?

“Cramps related to a period are common and just noted as pelvic or lower back pain, and it’s not always the case to know if it’s caused by endometriosis of just good ol’ fashion period cramps,” explained Dr. Sherry A. Ross, women’s health expert and author of She-ology and the upcoming She-ology The She-quel. “Pain is not the most common symptom related to PMS, so endometriosis period pain is not part of the differential diagnosis.”

Dr. Peters revealed that endometriosis symptoms “can be broad and often confusing” stating that “on average it takes many years for women to be diagnosed.”

Painful periods, pain with sex, pain with bowel movements, and trouble getting pregnant are the most common symptoms of the disease. “Depending on where endometriosis is located, women can also experience vague symptoms of sciatica, bloating, nausea, vomiting, swelling, joint and muscle pains.”

Endometriosis pain is “more commonly seen before and during the period,” explained Dr. Ross. Because of this, it is extremely difficult to distinguish whether someone’s mild, moderate, or severe pain is caused by PMS or endometriosis – no matter their level of discomfort.

Although pain doesn’t directly indicate endometriosis, it could be the root of your discomfort – “some of the same nerves that supply sensation to the uterus also will be affected by endometriosis that grows near it,” noted Dr. Peters. When women have other symptoms of endometriosis like pain with bowel movements, pain with sex, and difficulty getting pregnant, then it’s slightly easier to identify the disease.

However, the only way to 100 percent diagnose someone with endometriosis is to perform surgery.

Can Endometriosis Be Cured?

While no cure has been found yet, there are several pain-relieving options available, including over-the-counter treatments and natural remedies – Dr. Ross confirmed that “the goal in treating endometriosis is to treat the symptoms.”

One of the most effective methods of pain relief is surgical treatment focused on excising endometriosis. Dr. Peters urges that women should seek specialized gynecologic surgeons that specialize in endometriosis surgery and warns against ablating endometriosis due its scarring side effects.

Birth control methods are the most common medicines prescribed for endometriosis management because they often cause one’s period to stop, but sometimes that isn’t enough relief. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help alleviate endometriosis period pain, too.

Dr. Peters admitted that many of her patients swear by acupuncture as a natural remedy for endometriosis period pain. CBD is another way to naturally manage your pain – it can “relax muscles in the pelvis and distracts your brain from feeling the pain,” according to Dr. Ross.

Recently, a 29-year-old Thai woman paid 70,000 baht to a plastic surgeon (RM9,590) for a breast reduction surgery that resulted in her losing her nipples!

The woman, who is reportedly an online trader and famous beauty agent, wanted to perform a breast lift and reduce her cup size from 380cc to 275cc. The price of the surgery was originally 79,000 baht (RM10,823) but she managed to negotiate the price down to 70,000 baht (RM9,590).

After the operation, the woman had her doubts because the surgery ended a lot sooner than she expected it to. Nonetheless, she decided not to think too much about it since she trusted the clinic and would return for a checkup.

Unfortunately, things didn’t get better for this poor woman. She said she found a black wound on her nipple a few days after the surgery and suspected that it was rotting. While the doctor assured her that this was normal, the wound began to harden and cause her pain.

She returned to the clinic and when the doctor assessed the situation, he said another operation was necessary. He then proceeded to make her lie down on the surgery bed and blocked her eyes with a towel.

According to China Press, the doctor injected her with drugs and she felt him perform a series of actions that tore the wound.

When she was finally permitted to see what was going on, the poor woman discovered that her right nipple was gone and the left nipple was slightly protruding!

Outraged by the way her body was violated, the woman talked to the doctor’s assistant and demanded 500,000 baht (RM68,502) worth of compensation money.

The woman tried to appeal to the clinic’s shareholders on this matter but they refused to take responsibility for the damages incurred on her. Not only did they refuse to apologise, they blamed her for making too many complaints and dared her to report the claim.

Sadly, the woman had to resort to finding another hospital that would undo their mistake. The estimated cost of the surgery to fix the mistake was 300,000 baht (RM41,100).

She has since been spotted reporting the case with her lawyer at the Sudir District police station, Bangkok. Hopefully, the clinic will be dealt with accordingly for their irresponsible actions.

CHANDIGARH: A 22-year-old married woman who was misdiagnosed with HIV positive by a private clinic died on Tuesday night after she slipped into a coma in Shimla. Himachal CM Jai Ram Thakur has ordered a probe into the incident.

Fresh tests conducted at a government hospital had shown that she did not have HIV.

The issue was raised in the state assembly by Rohru Congress MLA Mohan Lal Brakta to which Thakur said that the director of the health services would be asked to look into the incident and submit a report within a fortnight.

He said that the woman died at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla due to severe mental and emotional shock after she came to know about the HIV positive report. The woman had gone to the private clinic for a check-up due to an ailment. The clinic conducted some tests and gave her the results without apprising her about its contents.

She later went to Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) in Shimla for treatment where her husband was told about the report prepared by the private clinic. She was then asked to undergo fresh tests. When the woman came to know that she has been diagnosed ‘HIV positive’ by the private clinic she went into a coma. She was then shifted to IGMC where she passed away.

The report of the freshly conducted tests at the government hospital had stated that she was not HIV positive.

The MLA demanded strict action against the private clinic situated in the Rohru subdivision in Shimla district and also sought adequate compensation for the 22-year-old woman’s family.

The Chief Minister stated that the matter is very sensitive and after the probe report is received, strict action will be taken against the private clinic for preparing a wrong report. Also, compensation to the deceased woman’s family will be provided as per rules
