What the Evidence and Formulation Really Matter

Exosomes have quickly become one of skincare’s most talked-about ingredients. They’re appearing in products positioned for skin renewal, improved elasticity, and post-treatment care, yet the term itself tells consumers surprisingly little. A formula may mention exosomes without explaining where they came from, whether they survived manufacturing, or how their integrity was verified.

That distinction matters. Research suggests exosomes have potential applications in skin rejuvenation and hair growth; however, they are complex biological materials rather than conventional cosmetic ingredients. Their performance depends on their source, processing, and preservation.

What exactly are exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny particles released by cells to exchange biological information. Ong Chee Tian, a skin cell technician at a cell research company, compares them to vehicles carrying messages between cities. Their cargo can include proteins, growth factors, cytokines, and genetic messages that influence how cells communicate.

They’re found across many forms of life, including humans, animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, protozoa and algae. Although their structures can vary between species, their broad role remains cellular communication.

Their small size and ability to carry biological signals have attracted particular interest in regenerative dermatology. A review titled “Exosomes derived stem cells as a modern therapeutic approach for skin rejuvenation and hair regrowth” describes exosomes as potentially suitable carriers for delivering substances to skin cells.

That doesn’t mean every product marketed with exosome language will produce the same result. It means researchers have identified a promising delivery system whose usefulness depends heavily on the material inside the formula and how that material has been handled.

What does the research say about skin benefits?

As cells can take up exosomes, researchers are examining whether these microscopic messengers can support processes associated with renewal and repair. Mr Ong describes them as catalysts that may help keep the skin’s cellular environment active and balanced.

The scientific interest extends beyond cosmetic aging. A review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, “Exosomes: Historical Evolution and Roles in Dermatology,” reported that exosomes may have potential as a treatment option in areas including wound healing, acne, psoriasis, and vitiligo. The wording is significant: “may” indicates a developing field, rather than a settled clinical conclusion.

Regenerative dermatology is also exploring a shift away from therapies involving whole mesenchymal stem cells toward the signals released by those cells. Exosomes are central to that research because they can transport proteins and other signaling molecules without being whole cells themselves.

For skincare consumers, the responsible takeaway is that exosomes have a plausible biological role and encouraging research behind them.

Why the label alone isn’t enough

Formulating with exosomes is difficult. Their lipid membranes naturally protect their biological cargo, but heat, extreme pH, harsh chemicals, and unsuitable physical processing can damage their structure. Storage conditions may also affect whether they remain intact.

This creates an obvious problem for shoppers. A product can be promoted using the language of exosomes, yet the finished formula may lack biologically intact, functional exosomes. Some formulas may instead contain peptides. Peptides can be useful ingredients, but they don’t perform the same cellular transport function.

Source and preservation can shape the formula

Exosomes used in cosmetic or regenerative products may be derived from human, animal or plant cells or created as synthetic laboratory models. The supplied research doesn’t provide direct comparative evidence establishing that one category is universally superior.

There is, however, a biological rationale for examining the source. According to Mr Ong, mammalian-derived exosomes have structural and molecular features that are closer to human biology. He suggests this may make them more biocompatible and better able to interact with human skin cells than plant-derived alternatives, whose lipid and protein composition can differ.

Calecim Professional offers one example of how a medical-grade skincare brand approaches this issue. Its skincare and haircare formulas use PTT-6®, an ingredient derived from mesenchymal stem cells found in New Zealand red deer cord lining.

The company says its scientists work with formulation partners to manage conditions that could denature PTT-6® during production. CellResearch Corporation, the company behind the technology, has also used scanning electron microscopy to visually confirm intact extracellular exosomes in Calecim Professional’s Advanced Hair System. This finding supports the presence of preserved exosome structures in that particular finished formula, rather than proving that all products carrying an exosome claim contain intact material.

What about safety?

Safety concerns surrounding exosomes often centre on the health and origin of the cells that produced them. Exosomes released by diseased or cancerous cells aren’t equivalent to those derived from healthy cells, so the source needs to be considered rather than treating all exosomes as one interchangeable ingredient.

According to Mr Ong, PTT-6® is produced from the secretome of red deer umbilical cord lining stem cells collected from birth tissue. The tissue is obtained after birth without harming the mother or fawn and would otherwise be treated as biological waste. Because these cells come from a protected birth-tissue environment, the company says they haven’t undergone ageing-related changes or exposure to environmental stressors.

Mr Ong also distinguishes cancer arising through accumulated genetic mutations in a person’s aged or damaged cells from exposure to exosomes derived from healthy stem cells. This explanation addresses the concern in relation to PTT-6®, but it shouldn’t be interpreted as a blanket safety assessment covering every exosome source or formulation.

Exosomes also have potential in haircare

The same signalling characteristics that make exosomes interesting for skin have prompted research into hair regeneration. Reviews cited in the supplied material suggest that exosomes may deliver growth factors and signalling molecules to areas of the hair follicle.

The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review reports that exosomes may act on follicular niches, including the dermal papilla and bulge, and encourage follicles to move from the resting telogen phase towards the active anagen phase. Another review, “Exosomes in Dermatology: Emerging Roles in Skin Health and Disease,” describes their potential to stimulate hair follicles and support growth in people with alopecia or other hair disorders.

So, are exosomes worth considering?

Exosomes are more than a cosmetic buzzword. They’re genuine biological messengers with emerging applications in skin and hair regeneration. The research supports continued interest, particularly in their ability to transport signalling molecules and interact with cells.

The harder question isn’t simply whether exosomes can work. It’s whether a particular product contains appropriately sourced, intact exosomes in a stable formulation. Before choosing one, look beyond the front label. Reputable sourcing, careful processing, evidence of preservation and measured claims are far more informative than the word “exosome” on its own.

Exosomes have quickly become one of skincare’s most talked-about ingredients.
