Attack traffic drops, but the support desk starts receiving complaints about failed returns. The return form accepts free text, and a rule is matching legitimate input. The first operational test of a WAF is often how quickly a team can identify and fix that kind of false positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A web application firewall inspects HTTP requests at a point in the delivery path where the necessary request details are visible. Rules can act on attributes such as paths, headers, or request patterns, depending on the service and configuration. This makes a WAF useful for filtering malicious traffic and buying time to patch certain vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put the firewall on the path clients actually use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Map the public hostname, edge or gateway, load balancer, and origin. Identify where TLS terminates and whether any client can reach the origin directly. Include alternative hostnames and machine-to-machine routes. An exposed path around the enforcement point can leave the same application accessible through a different entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then check the limits of inspection. For an API, look at body-size limits, content types, and how the platform handles traffic it can only inspect partially. A rule proven on a short browser request may behave differently on an upload or a large JSON payload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose the platform that fits the application\u2019s entry point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><th>Platform<\/th><th>Natural deployment fit<\/th><th>What to test<\/th><\/tr><tr><td>Cloudflare WAF<\/td><td>Web and API traffic already routed through Cloudflare.<\/td><td>Origin reachability, event visibility, and rule exceptions on the proposed plan.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>AWS WAF<\/td><td>Supported AWS entry points such as CloudFront or Application Load Balancer.<\/td><td>Scope, logging, and the request-body handling of the specific protected resource.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Azure WAF<\/td><td>Azure Front Door or Application Gateway deployments.<\/td><td>The rules and exclusions available on the selected service, including how policies attach.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deployment details are documented for <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.cloudflare.com\/waf\/get-started\/\">Cloudflare WAF<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/waf\/\">AWS WAF<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/azure\/web-application-firewall\/\">Azure Web Application Firewall<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Promote rules to blocking with evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use observation or count mode where available to see what the proposed rules would match. Include legitimate browser traffic, signed API requests, webhooks, and unusual but permitted inputs. Decide how the application and security teams will correlate a failed request with a rule event. Redact sensitive request data from logs where appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an exception is needed, limit it to the affected path, field, and rule where the platform supports that scope. A narrowly targeted exception preserves inspection for other requests. Assign an owner and a review trigger, especially when the exception exists to support a short-lived application behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A WAF can also serve as a temporary virtual patch while the application team fixes a vulnerability. Track both changes and confirm when the application fix is deployed.
