Kirk \u2014 William Shatner \u2014 undergoes &#8216;restorative&#8217; stem cell therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sourcea: ottawacitizen.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skeptics such as the University of Alberta\u2019s Timothy Caulfield say \nthere is no good evidence from human trials to support the idea that \ninjecting stem cells has a global, anti-aging effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be \nhonest, it isn\u2019t even a scientifically plausible idea,\u201d Caulfield, \nCanada Research Chair in health law and policy, said in an email from \nLisbon, where, coincidentally, he was speaking on the power of celebrity\n narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I\u2019m sure Shatner means well, it is still \nfrustrating to have celebrities endorse procedures like this. They lead \nto headlines that both help to publicize these clinics and legitimize \nthe unproven therapies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caulfield said it was personally \nupsetting to him that Shatner \u2014 Capt. James T. Kirk to adoring fans \nworldwide \u2014 is involved. \u201cLet me put it this way,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI once had\n a cat named Tiberius.\u201d (The \u201cT\u201d in James Kirk\u2019s middle name stands for \nTiberius.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shatner, a Montreal native, declined a request for an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\n DiRienzo, CEO and founder of ProGenaCell, confirmed to the Post that \nShatner received an infusion of stem cells about two weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m  a close friend of Bill\u2019s. I\u2019ve been a friend of Bill\u2019s for years,\u201d  DiRienzo said. \u201cAnd he is an intellectually exceptional, physically  exceptional individual, notwithstanding his 88 years of age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiRienzo said Shatner had explored the possibility of stem cell \ntransplantation for at least seven or eight years. \u201cWe started by \ntreating one of his horses years ago\u201d for a bad knee, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shatner\u2019s\n doctor chose to use cord blood stem cell products supplied by Invitrx \nTherapeutics, Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved \nthe cells for human use. \u201cWe knew we could lawfully give the cells here,\n in the U.S., which we did,\u201d DiRienzo said. Senapathi, \u201ca truly \nbrilliant stem cell scientist,\u201d administered the cells by IV infusion to\n Shatner at his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actor received primarily mesenchymal \nstem cells \u2014 cells that can differentiate, or grow, into a variety of \ncell types, including bone, cartilage, muscle cells and fat cells.&nbsp;The \nidea is to restore cellular function to cells that have undergone \n\u201csenescence\u201d \u2014 cells that have grown old, and stopped dividing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\n would be like bringing in a bunch of skilled labourers into a house \nthat needs to be remodelled, and these skilled labourers just start \nfixing things,\u201d DiRienzo explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shatner received a double dose. \u201cHe got 60 million\u201d cells.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Unlicensed clinics charging Canadians thousands for unproven stem cell therapies<\/li><li>Study reveals explosion of unproven stem-cell treatment in U.S. \u2014 and many Canadians are seeking them out<\/li><li>William Shatner\u2019s on a musical mission, despite not being able to really sing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>DiRienzo said the risks are \u201calmost nonexistent,\u201d as long \nas the cells are properly harvested, manufactured and processed in \napproved laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Bill\u2019s case, there are no underlying illnesses that we treated. It was for overall restoration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis\n first text to me (after the stem cell infusion) said, \u2018Geez. I rode \nfive horses today, and I\u2019m feeling less pain.\u2019\u201d (Shatner breeds and \nshows American Saddlebreds and Quarter horses.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiRienzo said his \ncompany has received \u201cquite a few\u201d inquiries following Shatner\u2019s May 31 \ntweet. The roughly US$16,000 cost of the therapy was \u201cgifted\u201d to \nShatner, but the actor is not being paid to promote the therapy, \nDiRienzo said. \u201cGosh, no, not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t endorse it. He just had it done. There\u2019s no endorsement there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DiRienzo\n said there is science behind the treatment and that a \u201chuge amount\u201d of \nstudies has been published on stem cell therapies since the 1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One  randomized, double-blind study published in 2018 by University of Miami  researchers found that frail, elderly people showed improvements in  physical performance and markers of inflammation after receiving  mesenchymal stem cell therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stem cell biologist Paul Knoepfler, of UC Davis School of Medicine, \nisn\u2019t convinced. \u201cI don\u2019t know that these (cord blood stem cells) would \nactually do anything beneficial when infused into an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s \nnot clear how many of the stem cells would survive after injection into \nthe body \u2014 they come from a different person, so there\u2019s a good chance \nmany would be destroyed by the immune system \u2014&nbsp;or how long they would \nhang around in an otherwise healthy, aging adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cells do \nsecrete growth factors and other molecules \u201cthat, hypothetically, could \ndo some stuff,\u201d Knoepfler said. \u201cThey might do some good stuff, and they\n might do some stuff that\u2019s not so good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He appreciates that Shatner began his tweet with the #ad hashtag, \u201cBecause a lot of celebrities don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m\n sure William Shatner wants to keep on going and be healthy. I can\u2019t \nreally fault him for personal choice.
