One in eight Australian women with endometriosis<\/strong>\u00a0are turning to cannabis in a bid to relieve their chronic pain.<\/p>\n

Researchers from\u00a0NICM Health Research Institute,\u00a0Western Sydney University, and\u00a0UNSW Sydney\u00a0surveyed 484 women on how they self-manage the symptoms of the debilitating condition. The\u00a0results are published\u00a0in the\u00a0Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada.<\/p>\n

What they found was that more than three-quarters of women surveyed turned to strategies like yoga, dietary changes, heat packs, and exercise. The most effective strategy, however, was reported to be cannabis.<\/p>\n

Researchers estimate that\u00a0Endometriosis affects more than 1 in 10\u00a0Australian women. The chronic condition occurs when cells like those that line the uterus \u2013 the endometrium \u2013 are found outside the uterus.<\/p>\n

During ovulation, the cells thicken. But unlike the cells that are found inside the uterus, these outside cells cannot leave the body. They bleed, cause inflammation and pain before they heal. Over time this process can lead to scar tissue.<\/p>\n

The pain of endometriosis can be chronic and so severe that it stops women from going about their daily life.\u00a0Symptoms include\u00a0chronic pelvic pain, painful periods and infertility.<\/p>\n
