{"id":3136,"date":"2019-11-30T13:52:51","date_gmt":"2019-11-30T13:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mymedicplus.com\/news\/?p=3136"},"modified":"2021-03-31T00:54:51","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T19:24:51","slug":"endometriosis-thousands-share-devastating-impact-of-condition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mymedicplus.com\/blog\/endometriosis-thousands-share-devastating-impact-of-condition\/","title":{"rendered":"Endometriosis: Thousands share devastating impact of condition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Source: dentondaily.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">More than 13,500 women have taken part in research revealing the devastating effect of endometriosis.<\/p>\n<p>Half said they had had suicidal thoughts, and many said they rely on highly addictive painkillers.<\/p>\n<p>Most also said endometriosis \u2013 involving painful periods \u2013 had badly affected their education, career and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>MPs are to launch an inquiry into women\u2018s experiences of endometriosis following the research.<\/p>\n<p>Women with the condition answered questions on how the condition has affected them. The charity Endometriosis UK helped gather the responses.<\/p>\n<p>The condition affects one in 10 women and, as well as extremely heavy periods, can cause debilitating pain and sometimes infertility.<\/p>\n<p>Bethany Willis, who lives in Essex, was one of those who took part in the research. She began having endometriosis symptoms aged just nine.<\/p>\n<p>She knew what it was because her mum and grandmother also have the condition.<\/p>\n<p>Now 19, Bethany says: \u201cThe pain is like barbed wire wrapped around your insides and someone\u2018s pulling it while at the same time an animal is trying to eat its way through you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point she was in so much pain that she took an overdose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI texted my boyfriend and said goodbye. I was ready to end my life there and then because of the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was finally diagnosed this summer following surgery and \u2013 though still in daily pain \u2013 she is managing to cope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mind is clearer and I have more energy, but the years of not being treated mean I\u2018ve had to drop out of veterinary school and my dream career,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Turley MP, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Endometriosis which will carry out the inquiry, said: \u201cIt wasn\u2018t until I was hospitalised and had the diagnosis that I realised how little attention endometriosis receives, how limited research funding is, and how many women are misdiagnosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the data gave \u201cmillions of affected women a voice\u201d and the APPG would be calling on the government to act.<\/p>\n<p>Tayla Marshall, 24, from Northamptonshire, is one of those who relies on pain relief to cope with her symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>She has been through multiple operations and two chemically-induced menopauses and she is now addicted to strong opioid medication.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI worry every day about my opioid intake. I take 50ml of morphine sulfate, Fentanyl patches, Naproxen and 30mg of amitriptyline and although I\u2018m not addicted in my mind, my body is physically dependant on this now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I went a day without it, I would start to experience nasty withdrawal symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because her condition is so severe, Tayla is considering having a hysterectomy when she\u2018s 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have six years to try for a family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut my last relationship ended due to the impact of endometriosis. I wasn\u2018t able to be intimate with my partner very often, unless I was dosed up on medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am also in a position where I have reduced chances of falling pregnant naturally and carrying a baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have sort of managed to get my head around the idea of not having children but it breaks my heart every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is endometriosis?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Emma Cox, CEO of the charity Endometriosis UK, which helped gather the women\u2018s testimonies, said: \u201cIt cannot be overstated the devastating impact this condition is clearly having on people\u2018s physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout investment in research, a reduction in diagnosis time \u2013 which averages at a shocking 7.5 years \u2013 and better access to pain management, women will continue to face huge barriers in accessing the right treatment at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some women choose to undergo a hysterectomy and early menopause in a bid to stop their symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Middleton, 42, from West Yorkshire, recently underwent the operation to remove her ovaries, womb, fallopian tubes and cervix.<\/p>\n<p>She says it is her last hope: \u201cI just want rid of everything,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But she added: \u201cThe risk is that I\u2018m no better and that there\u2018s damage and it gets worse but you have to have hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister for women\u2018s health, Caroline Dinenage said: \u201cI urge clinicians to play their part in breaking down the ongoing stigma around endometriosis by ensuring they follow NICE guidelines and encourage employers to rise to the challenge by creating supportive and flexible ways to help those living with these conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3137,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[389,1458,1363,427,113],"class_list":["post-3136","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-endometriosis","tag-gynecological","tag-painful-periods","tag-symptoms","tag-women"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
