SABIN, Minn. \u2014 She\u2019s the familiar voice on WAVE 104.1, but there\u2019s something about Natalie Burbeck that many listeners can\u2019t hear.<\/p>\n
Burbeck knew from a young age her body was experiencing something different from other girls.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, you would talk with girlfriends about things and you find out, okay, they have these symptoms and you feel like yours are so much worse,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
Menstrual cycle cramps were intolerable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were to the point where I was miserable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Major headaches, constant fatigue and extreme pain told her something was off.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t until three years ago, when her symptoms started to worsen, that she decided it\u2019s time to do something about it.<\/p>\n
But multiple visits to different doctors gave her zero answers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI doubted that anyone believed me. That \u2014 I was like, \u2018Am I going crazy?\u2019 I know something is wrong here.\u201d<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t until she did her own research and found the right physician at Sanford Health that things started to look up.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I found Dr. Coauette, I explained to her, I had done all this research on Endometriosis and I said, \u2018I really do believe that it is this,\u2019 and she was the first doctor that really believed in me and was like, \u2018We\u2019re going to get to the bottom of this. We\u2019re going to figure this out.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Endometriosis, often referred to as the \u201cSilent Disease,\u201d affects 1 in 10 women, but it\u2019s rarely talked about.<\/p>\n
\u201cMostly because those symptoms are so common in women with your period. It\u2019s your period. And a lot of women don\u2019t talk about it, so you just, your mom says, \u2018Yeah, I had bad cycles. I took Motrin and moved on,’\u201d says Sanford OBGYN Dr. Jordan Coauette.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it.<\/p>\n
Although there\u2019s no permanent cure for Endometriosis, a laparoscopy removes as much of that tissue as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was super scared about the surgery, but it was very easy and I feel great afterwards. The recovery was so easy. I had surgery over a year ago and I feel really good,\u201d says Burbeck.<\/p>\n
The lesson she\u2019s passing on to other women is to simply listen to their bodies.<\/p>\n
