Are you a man thinking of plastic surgery? Ever wonder if an eye lift, nose job or facelift might increase your handsomeness? Worried about what others might think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the answer is yes, I\u2019ve got some news for you. According to a new study appearing in\u00a0JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, men who undergo a nip and tuck procedure are seen as more attractive and trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The research, conducted by plastic surgeons at Georgetown University and Brooke Army Medical Center, revealed that guys experience similar benefits as women perceptually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For this investigation, 24 men went \u201cunder the knife\u201d for one of the following surgeries: an upper eyelid lift [upper blepharoplasty], a reduction of lower eyelid skin [lower blepharoplasty], a face-lift, a brow-lift, a neck-lift, a nose job (rhinoplasty) or a chin implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The average age of each man was 49 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the study, the participants, all who paid for their own procedures, agreed to let others look at their \u201cbefore and after\u201d pictures for the purposes of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The photos were shown to 150 people \u2013 most of whom were white and between the ages of 25-34. None of the viewers were briefed on the study\u2019s intent. Each person was asked to rate the personality of the men who underwent surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Choices included being aggressive, likeability, trustworthiness, attractiveness and masculinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The results revealed significantly high perceptions of attractiveness and trustworthiness. Additionally, the men who underwent the surgeries were viewed as more likable and masculine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was only one exception. The guys who underwent a chin implant did not show any meaningful improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Michael J. Reilly, MD, an associate professor of otolaryngology at Georgetown’s School of Medicine and study investigator said the following in a press release:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe tendency to judge facial appearance is likely rooted in evolution, as studies suggest evaluating a person based on appearance is linked to survival-our animal instinct tells us to avoid those who are ill-willed and we know from previous research that personality traits are drawn from an individual’s neutral expressions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men\u2019s Variety spoke to Dan Berger, MD with\u00a0NorthStar Medical Center\u00a0in Chicago. Berger offers non-evasive cosmetic procedures to men, including Botox and dermal fillers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMore and more, men are doing away with the old stereotypes [plastic surgery] and opting for procedures to help them look there best. Maybe it has something to do with how competitive guys are, who knows? All I can say is there has been a sea change in attitudes,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A change, indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past, men perceived other men who \u201cwent under the knife\u201d as narcissistic. But given the growth in the men\u2019s grooming and self-care market, a shift has taken place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Men now make up 15-20% of the cosmetic surgery market, and that number is expected to grow significantly over the next decade. \u201cMen are increasingly concerned with how they look. Today, it\u2019s OK for them to talk about the topic \u2013 and do something about it,\u201d Berger adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are other ways to enhance your appearance that don\u2019t include surgery or needles.
