John Fawkner Private Hospital’s

John Fawkner Private Hospital’s reputation as the facility of choice for the people of Melbourne’s north-west is testimony to the hard work and dedication of our friendly and highly trained staff.

Formerly Sacred Heart Hospital, it was built by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart and opened its doors in September 1939. At that time, Sacred Heart was perhaps best known as a maternity hospital and the midwifery unit was the third busiest in Victoria.
Today, our hospital is a fully accredited, 142-bed major surgical, acute medical and emergency hospital located in Melbourne’s north-western suburbs. Equipped for a comprehensive range of surgical procedures, medical treatment and diagnostic services, we are recognised by both the local community and visiting medical fraternity as a provider of a high level of patient care and support.

Please call John Fawkner Private Hospital on (03) 9385 2500 to arrange a time to drop in and take a look at our facilities. We would be pleased to answer any of your questions or show you our facilities.

Highlights

Accreditation

John Fawkner Private Hospital underwent a Periodic Review with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) in April 2009. Mandatory criteria ratings were achieved resulting in the award of Ongoing Accreditation. We received four (4) Excellent Achievement ratings and are pleased to include the details of the ratings awarded:

  • Excellent Achievement in the continuous quality improvement system, demonstrating our commitment to improving the outcome of care and service delivery;
  • Excellent Achievement in the management of health care incidents, complaints and feedback, ensuring improvements to the systems of care;
  • Excellent Achievement in the processes for credentialing and defining the scope of clinical practice which support safe, quality health care;
  • Excellent Achievement in providing safety management systems which ensure the safety and well being for patients, staff, visitors and contractors.

John Fawkner Private Hospital strives for continuous improvement in the quality of the services we provide. We have developed and are continually reviewing our quality action plan to achieve this. Some of the key projects include:

  • Participation in the National Institute of Clinical Studies Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention Project. The aim of this project is to improve the use of VTE prophylaxis, which is known to be effective in reducing deep vein and other types of blood clots in hospitalised patients.
  • The ABC of CCF (Congestive Cardiac Failure), a quality project developed and implemented by nurses on our medical ward. The aim of this project is to ensure any patient admitted to John Fawkner Private Hospital has a treatment plan which includes their care following discharge and into their home environment.
  • Quality Working Parties have been developed during 2009 to ensure a focus on specific aspects of patient care including paediatric admissions and patient falls. These groups involve nurses and allied health professionals who are responsible for ensuring best practice are followed hospital-wide.

Please contact our General Manager if you have any questions about our Accreditation or our Quality Improvement Program.
