History:

The Alexandria Clinic was founded in 1941 when Dr. Harold Stemsrud and Dr. Clifford joined to practice in Alexandria, MN. Dr. Clifford had been practicing in Osakis and Dr. Stemsrud in Parkers Prairie, MN prior to that time. Their first office was located at 628 Broadway.

Dr. Stemsrud left to serve in the Navy during WWII and Dr. C. E. Carlson moved from Aitkin, MN to join Dr. Clifford in 1944. At the end of WWII, Dr. L. F. Wasson returned to Alexandria and joined Dr. Clifford and Dr. Carlson. When Dr. Stemsrud was released from military duty in 1946, the original four members of the Alexandria Clinic, P.A. worked together for the first time. At that time, they needed larger quarters, and the building at 613 Broadway was remodeled and served as the home of the Alexandria Clinic, P.A. for the next ten years. It was shortly after that, in 1946, that Mr. Clarence "Kelly" Martinson became the Clinic Manager and was synonymous with the Alexandria Clinic, P.A. for the next 30 years.

In the early 1950's, Dr. Peter Geiser became the next member of the Alexandria Clinic, P.A. In 1953 and 1954 came the additions of Dr. Bill Heegaard and Dr. Doug Perkins. At that time a larger facility was needed, and the original clinic building was built at 610 Fillmore and occupied in 1955. In 1961, Dr. Vern Kuhlmann became a member of the clinic. In 1969, Dr. Fred Green joined the clinic as a General Surgeon, which provided the first clinical specialist outside of Family Practice in Alexandria.

The 1970's and 1980's marked a period of rapid growth and expansion for the Alexandria Clinic, P.A. with the addition of specialists in the areas of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and OB/GYN. It was also during this period that a satellite office was established in Osakis. In 1988 a major expansion of the clinic facilities at 610 Fillmore was undertaken, with a complete remodeling of the facility as well as doubling of the space available.

The Alexandria Clinic's growth continued. In 1995, the Osakis Clinic was doubled in size to accommodate four physicians. Also at that time, a long range plan was developed that resulted in the construction of a new 55,000 square foot building in Alexandria, built to accommodate 31 physicians and two mid-level providers. This building was occupied August 4, 1997.
