Starship Children’s Health

Starship Children’s Health

Starship Children's Health Service provides a wide range of complex medical, surgical and mental health services for children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Services are provided in inpatient, outpatient, daystay and community settings, including the Community Child Health and Disability Service, Safekids and Paediatric Home Care. Outpatient clinics for the Auckland region are conducted in Starship, Tamaki, West Auckland and the North Shore. Approximately 45 Outreach Clinics are provided by Medical Services in a variety of localities throughout the country. The paediatric specialty teams include nurse specialists who provide nursing expertise within each specialty. Many other patients are treated in outreach services, both outpatient and day surgery. Starship specialists travel to other hospitals to provide outreach services.

The hospital was New Zealand's first hospital built exclusively for children and young people and their health needs. It is located on the Auckland City Hospital site, Park Road, Grafton, Auckland, New Zealand. Starship was opened on 18th November 1991. The name was chosen because of the design of the building and in the hope that children and young people would think of it as a less frightening place to go.
