Wisdom teeth (third molars) typically erupt between ages 17-25 — the last permanent teeth to emerge. Causes & Risk Factors

Diagnosis & Tests

Treatment Options
Asymptomatic, fully impacted wisdom teeth with no pathology: observational management with annual OPG review. Complications
Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage: temporary paresthesia (lip, chin numbness) in 5-8% of cases; permanent in <1%. Lingual nerve injury (tongue numbness, taste loss): <1%. Dry socket (alveolar osteitis): most common postoperative complication (10-30% for lower wisdom teeth), presenting with severe pain at 2-4 days post-extraction — requires irrigation and analgesic dressing. Jaw fracture (rare — weakened mandible). Damage to adjacent second molar. Secondary infection (spreading cellulitis). Dentigerous cyst expansion. Prevention & Management
