mmHg — pressure between beats
Understanding Your Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and recorded as two numbers:
- Systolic pressure (top number) — the pressure when your heart beats and pushes blood out.
- Diastolic pressure (bottom number) — the pressure when your heart rests between beats.
AHA Blood Pressure Categories
| Category | Systolic | Diastolic |

If your blood pressure is 180/120 mmHg or above, wait 5 minutes and test again. If still elevated, seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait. Hypertensive crisis can lead to stroke, heart attack, or organ damage.
