Dr. Karim Benamara

Dr. Karim Benamara is a senior pulmonologist at Mustapha Bacha University Hospital, Algiers — Algeria's primary university medical centre and a national referral institution for complex respiratory disease. With 15 years of clinical practice, he manages a broad spectrum of respiratory conditions, from common presentations such as asthma and COPD to complex cases including lung malignancies and drug-resistant tuberculosis, which continues to represent a significant public health challenge in Algeria. Dr. Benamara trained in France to acquire advanced bronchoscopic skills, and his unit performs EBUS-guided sampling, flexible bronchoscopy, and endobronchial interventions. Dr. Benamara obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from Université d'Alger 1 (now Université Benyoucef Benkhedda), one of Algeria's most prestigious medical faculties. He then completed the Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) in Pneumologie, the standard Algerian specialist qualification in respiratory medicine, which involved intensive clinical rotations across pulmonology, intensive care, and thoracic surgery units. Dr. Benamara's clinical expertise spans diagnostic and interventional pulmonology. He is skilled in flexible bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for lymph node sampling, and bronchoalveolar lavage for infection diagnosis. In the chronic disease domain, he manages severe asthma (including biologic therapy candidates), advanced COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. His tuberculosis experience is extensive — he follows Algerian national TB programme protocols for drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant cases.
