Dr. Esperança Luís

Dr. Esperança Luís is a psychiatrist at Hospital Américo Boavida, one of Luanda's principal public hospitals, where she has served the mental health needs of the community for over 12 years. Angola faces significant demand for mental health services following decades of civil conflict, and Dr. Luís has been at the forefront of expanding psychiatric care within limited resource settings. She manages patients with a wide range of conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders. Her practice combines pharmacological management with psychosocial rehabilitation approaches adapted to the local cultural context. Dr. Luís is also involved in training nursing staff in basic mental health first aid.

Dr. Luís obtained her medical degree from Agostinho Neto University in Luanda, Angola's principal medical training institution. She subsequently completed a Diploma in Psychiatry through a regional training programme supported by international mental health organisations operating in sub-Saharan Africa. She holds a Certificate in Addiction Medicine, reflecting her commitment to addressing substance use disorders, which represent a growing public health burden in Angola. Dr. Luís has participated in WHO mental health gap action programme (mhGAP) training and has attended regional psychiatry workshops across southern Africa.

Dr. Luís specialises in adult psychiatry with a particular interest in mood disorders, psychosis, and addiction medicine. She conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, prescribes and monitors psychotropic medications, and provides crisis stabilisation for acutely unwell patients. Her experience in addiction counselling enables her to support patients with alcohol and substance dependence using both pharmacological and behavioural approaches. Dr. Luís also collaborates with social workers and community health workers to support patients' reintegration into family and community life following psychiatric episodes.

Dr. Luís conducts consultations in Portuguese and English. International patients or expatriates residing in Luanda seeking psychiatric evaluation are welcome at Hospital Américo Boavida. While dedicated international patient services are limited, Dr. Luís is experienced in communicating with overseas healthcare providers and can assist with medical documentation. Dr. Luís has been recognised by the Angolan Medical Association for her work in advancing mental health awareness in Angola. She has contributed to community outreach programmes that address the stigma associated with psychiatric illness in Angolan society.
