Dr. Manuel da Silva

Dr. Manuel da Silva is one of the senior general surgeons at Hospital Américo Boavida, the principal public referral hospital in Luanda and the largest in Angola. With over 18 years of surgical practice, he has built his career serving the complex healthcare needs of Luanda's urban population, including a growing number of patients from provincial cities and rural Angola who travel to the capital for specialist care.

Dr. da Silva trained in Angola and completed his surgical specialization with postgraduate exposure in Portugal, where he developed advanced laparoscopic skills. He returned to Angola committed to building local surgical capacity, and today he mentors junior doctors and medical residents at Hospital Américo Boavida's surgical training programme.

His daily practice encompasses a wide range of abdominal and trauma surgery. Angola's urban trauma burden — largely tied to road traffic injuries — forms a significant part of his caseload, and he has extensive experience managing complex polytrauma cases alongside the hospital's emergency medicine team. Dr. da Silva also maintains a general surgical outpatient clinic where he sees referrals from GPs across Luanda and surrounding municipalities.

Dr. da Silva completed his undergraduate medical degree (Licenciatura em Medicina) at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Agostinho Neto in Luanda, the country's primary medical school. He subsequently undertook specialty training in general surgery through Angola's national residency programme, with an extended training attachment at Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon, Portugal, where he gained proficiency in laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques. He has also attended regional surgical continuing education courses coordinated by the West African College of Surgeons and has participated in surgical skills workshops supported by international NGO partners operating in Angola.

Dr. da Silva's primary surgical focus is abdominal and gastrointestinal surgery. He performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, inguinal and umbilical hernia repairs, and bowel resection procedures. His trauma surgery experience includes damage-control laparotomy, splenectomy, and management of penetrating and blunt abdominal injuries. In the outpatient setting, he evaluates patients with chronic abdominal pain, suspected malignancies, and postoperative follow-up. He also assists with oncological resections in partnership with oncology colleagues, reflecting the increasing cancer burden in Angola's population. Dr. da Silva is trained in open and laparoscopic approaches and selects technique based on available equipment and patient clinical factors.

Dr. da Silva's primary commitment is to clinical service at one of Angola's most demanding public hospitals. Given resource constraints and the high patient volume at Hospital Américo Boavida, formal academic publications have not been his primary focus. He has, however, contributed to internal audit reports on surgical outcomes and infection control protocols within the hospital's surgical department, and has presented case series at national medical conferences organised by the Ordem dos Médicos de Angola.

Dr. da Silva consults in Portuguese, which is the official language of Angola and widely spoken by the Angolan diaspora community in Portugal, Brazil, and other Lusophone countries. He also communicates in Kimbundu, which is widely spoken in Luanda and the Malanje region. His clinic at Hospital Américo Boavida receives patients from the broader SADC region seeking affordable surgical care. Diaspora patients returning from Portugal or Brazil for treatment find his bilingual Portuguese fluency and familiarity with international medical records helpful in coordinating their care. All initial consultations are conducted in-person at the hospital.

Dr. da Silva has been recognized within the Hospital Américo Boavida surgical department for his contributions to resident mentorship and surgical training.
