Dr. Hayk Sargsyan

Dr. Hayk Sargsyan is a consultant neurosurgeon at Surb Grigor Lusavorich Medical Center in Yerevan — one of Armenia's prominent healthcare institutions, named for the patron saint of Armenia. With 18 years of neurosurgical practice, Dr. Sargsyan is among Armenia's most skilled neurosurgeons, providing cranial and spinal surgical services that reduce the need for Armenians to travel abroad for neurosurgical care.

His brain tumor surgery practice uses the operative microscope and neuronavigation for safe and effective resection of gliomas, meningiomas, and metastatic brain tumors in coordination with Yerevan's oncology and radiation therapy services. He manages both elective tumor surgery and emergency neurosurgical presentations including acute traumatic brain injury, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, and acute hydrocephalus.

In spinal surgery, he performs the most commonly needed procedures: lumbar microdiscectomy for radiculopathy, lumbar decompression for spinal stenosis, and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for cervical disc disease. He applies intraoperative neuromonitoring for high-risk spinal procedures.

Dr. Sargsyan trained in Germany and holds the FEBNS designation from the European Association for Neurosurgical Societies. He is committed to training the next generation of Armenian neurosurgeons through his teaching role at Yerevan State Medical University. He communicates in Armenian, Russian, and English.

Dr. Sargsyan obtained his MD from Yerevan State Medical University and completed Neurosurgery residency in Yerevan at Surb Grigor Lusavorich Medical Center. He undertook higher neurosurgical training in Germany at the University Hospital Frankfurt's neurosurgery department, with additional fellowship training in minimally invasive spine surgery. He holds a PhD in Neurosurgery from Yerevan State Medical University and the FEBNS (Fellow of the European Board of Neurological Surgery) designation. He is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Yerevan State Medical University.

Dr. Sargsyan's neurosurgical practice encompasses both cranial and spinal surgery. In cranial surgery, he performs craniotomies with neuronavigation for supratentorial and posterior fossa tumor resection, evacuation of traumatic and spontaneous intracranial hematomas, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion for hydrocephalus. In spinal surgery, he performs lumbar microdiscectomy, cervical ACDF, lumbar laminectomy for stenosis, and instrumented lumbar fusion for instability. He performs intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (MEPs, SSEPs) for spinal cord at-risk procedures. He manages emergency neurosurgical presentations in the neurointensive care setting.

Dr. Sargsyan has published in the Yerevan State Medical University scientific journal and has contributed to the EANS registry. He participates in the Armenian Neurosurgical Society educational activities and has presented at EANS congresses and the South Caucasus Neurosurgery Symposium. He contributes to neurosurgery training at Yerevan State Medical University as Associate Professor.

Surb Grigor Lusavorich Medical Center serves Armenian domestic patients and diaspora Armenians. Dr. Sargsyan consults in Armenian, Russian, and English.
