Dr. Tamara Knowles

Dr. Tamara Knowles is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist at Princess Margaret Hospital — the main public hospital in Nassau and the Bahamas' primary referral center for women's health. With 15 years of clinical experience, she provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care to the Bahamian population and manages complex cases referred from family islands across the archipelago.

She trained at the University of the West Indies and completed her Doctorate of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, subsequently obtaining the MRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. This dual qualification reflects both Caribbean regional clinical experience and UK specialist standards.

The Bahamas has a high rate of caesarean section and a significant prevalence of non-communicable conditions including hypertension and obesity that complicate pregnancy. Dr. Knowles' high-risk obstetrics practice manages these complications and coordinates care for the complex obstetric cases that are transferred from family island clinics to Nassau. She also provides gynecological surgical care for fibroids, ovarian cysts, and cervical disease.

Dr. Knowles completed her MBBS at the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences — the leading Caribbean medical school for English-speaking countries. Dr. Knowles' obstetric practice manages both routine and high-risk pregnancies. She is experienced in managing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy including gestational hypertension and preeclampsia with magnesium sulfate management, gestational and pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy, multiple gestation, maternal anaemia, and abnormal fetal presentations including external cephalic version assessment. She performs caesarean sections — including emergency caesarean for acute fetal distress — and manages operative vaginal deliveries where appropriate.

In gynaecology, she performs abdominal and laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic and open myomectomy, ovarian cystectomy, and laparoscopic procedures for endometriosis staging and treatment. She performs colposcopy and cervical biopsy for abnormal cervical screening results and manages cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) with LEEP. She also manages fertility-related gynaecological conditions including PCOS and uterine anomalies in consultation with reproductive medicine specialists.

Princess Margaret Hospital serves Bahamian residents and provides care to international patients and expatriates residing in Nassau. Dr. Knowles offers video consultations for obstetric second opinions and gynecological consultation reviews, communicating in clear English. She provides written consultation summaries and can coordinate referrals to US specialist centers in Florida for cases requiring tertiary level care not available locally in Nassau.

Dr. Knowles is a member of the Bahamas Medical Association and the Caribbean College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, through which she engages with regional clinical standards and continuing education in women's health.
