Dr. Fatima Al-Musawi

Dr. Fatima Al-Musawi is a senior consultant pulmonologist at King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Manama — Bahrain's primary university-affiliated hospital, serving as the country's leading academic medical centre with extensive specialist services and international faculty. With 17 years of clinical experience, she is among Bahrain's most experienced respiratory medicine specialists.

King Hamad University Hospital, affiliated with Arabian Gulf University, maintains a strong commitment to international training standards and clinical research. Dr. Al-Musawi trained in the United Kingdom, obtaining her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and completing a specialist respiratory medicine fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London — one of the world's most distinguished centres for respiratory and cardiac medicine. Returning to Bahrain, she built the pulmonology service at KHUH and established the hospital's sleep medicine unit.

Bahrain has a high burden of asthma and atopic respiratory disease, driven by heat, dust, and high prevalence of atopy in the Gulf population. Dr. Al-Musawi manages a very high volume of asthma and allergic airway disease, and is experienced with biologic therapies for severe asthma. She is also involved in Bahrain's national respiratory disease burden assessment.

Dr. Al-Musawi completed her medical degree at the Arabian Gulf University College of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Bahrain. She undertook her internal medicine residency and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK). She completed a subspecialty respiratory medicine fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London — focusing on asthma, interstitial lung disease, and sleep medicine. She holds a Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine and is a member of the British Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

Dr. Al-Musawi's clinical expertise covers the full breadth of adult respiratory medicine with particular depth in obstructive airways disease and interstitial lung disease. In asthma, she assesses difficult asthma phenotypes, conducts FeNO and eosinophil-guided workup, and prescribes biologic therapies (mepolizumab, dupilumab, omalizumab) for eligible severe asthma patients. In COPD, she applies GOLD guidelines for pharmacological management, supervises pulmonary rehabilitation, and coordinates home oxygen and non-invasive ventilation.

In ILD, she performs multidisciplinary case discussion with radiology and rheumatology for IPF, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and connective tissue disease-associated ILD. She performs diagnostic bronchoscopy and EBUS for mediastinal staging and ILD investigation. Her sleep medicine practice includes diagnostic polysomnography interpretation and CPAP titration for obstructive sleep apnoea — an increasingly common condition in the Gulf population.
