Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam

Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam is a urologist at Dhaka Medical College Hospital — Bangladesh's most prominent public teaching hospital and a center of excellence for complex surgical care in the country. With 16 years of urological experience, he manages a high volume of urological conditions in both acute and elective settings, serving patients from Dhaka and from across Bangladesh.

Urological disease is highly prevalent in Bangladesh, driven in large part by the country's water quality challenges and dietary factors that contribute to a high incidence of urinary tract stones and kidney disease. Dr. Islam's practice reflects this reality, with a significant portion of his workload devoted to kidney and ureteric stone management using endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques.

He completed a Fellowship in Endourology in India, gaining advanced training in ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, and laser lithotripsy — techniques he has brought back to Bangladesh to improve outcomes for stone disease patients. He also manages benign prostatic hyperplasia with transurethral surgery and handles uro-oncological cases including bladder cancer and prostate cancer. Dr. Islam completed his MBBS at Dhaka Medical College — one of Bangladesh's leading government medical colleges. He subsequently completed his MS in Urology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh's premier postgraduate medical university, with specialty training in urological surgery.

To enhance his minimally invasive urological skills, Dr. Islam completed a Fellowship in Endourology at a leading Indian urology center, where he gained hands-on experience in ureteroscopic stone treatment, PCNL, and laser technologies applied to urology. He is an active member of the Bangladesh Association of Urological Surgeons and regularly participates in the Urological Association of Asia's scientific programs.

Dr. Islam's urological practice covers the full scope of general and minimally invasive urology. For urinary tract stone disease — his primary area of expertise — he performs ureteroscopy with holmium laser lithotripsy for ureteric stones and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large renal stones. For benign prostatic hyperplasia causing lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary retention, he performs transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

In uro-oncology, he performs transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) for bladder cancer diagnosis and treatment, radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. He manages prostate cancer diagnosis with TRUS-guided biopsy and coordinates multidisciplinary oncological management. He also performs circumcision, hydrocelectomy, and varicocelectomy.
