Dr. Mohammed Rafiqul Islam

Dr. Mohammed Rafiqul Islam is a consultant in emergency medicine at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) — one of the largest and busiest public hospitals in South Asia, serving as the primary emergency care referral center for Dhaka and the surrounding regions. With 15 years of emergency medicine experience, Dr. Islam manages one of the highest-volume emergency departments in Bangladesh.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital's emergency department receives enormous numbers of cases daily including road traffic accident victims — Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of road traffic injuries in Asia — acute cardiac presentations, stroke, dengue fever during epidemic seasons, snake bites, and medical emergencies of every variety. Dr. Islam's capacity for rapid, high-stakes clinical decision-making has been honed through years of managing these complex, high-acuity presentations in a high-volume, resource-constrained environment.

He completed his FCPS through the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons and undertook advanced training in emergency medicine. He is a member of the Society for Emergency Medicine of Bangladesh and contributes to emergency medicine training and capacity development. He consults in Bengali and English.

Dr. Islam completed his MBBS at Dhaka Medical College — one of Bangladesh's most prestigious medical institutions. He is highly skilled in trauma resuscitation following road traffic accidents, managing polytrauma, hemorrhagic shock, traumatic brain injury, and burns. Acute coronary syndrome management — including thrombolysis for STEMI when catheterization laboratory is not immediately available — stroke assessment, acute abdomen evaluation, and severe dengue with warning signs are all managed by his team. He performs advanced airway management including rapid sequence intubation, central venous access, chest drain insertion, and emergency needle decompression for tension pneumothorax.
