Dr. Kofi Akakpo

Dr. Kofi Akakpo is a general practitioner at CNHU Hubert Maga (Centre National Hospitalier et Universitaire), Benin's principal referral hospital in Cotonou. Over 16 years of practice, he has become an experienced clinician with deep expertise in tropical medicine, chronic disease management, and primary care delivery within the West African context. Dr. Akakpo regularly manages malaria, typhoid, and other endemic infections alongside non-communicable diseases including hypertension and diabetes, which are rapidly increasing in urban Benin. He communicates fluently in French, Fon (a major local language), and English, enabling him to serve both the local population and international patients residing in or visiting Cotonou. He is committed to evidence-based practice and community health education.

Dr. Akakpo earned his Doctorat en Médecine from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Cotonou — one of francophone West Africa's established medical training institutions, producing physicians well-grounded in the tropical disease burden and primary care challenges of the region. His medical training provided a strong foundation in both infectious disease management and general medicine.

He subsequently completed a Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) in General Medicine, deepening his clinical skills in primary care, chronic disease management, and tropical medicine for the West African context. He has undertaken continuing medical education through Ordre des Médecins du Bénin programmes, including IMCI training for childhood illness and WHO-based chronic disease management modules. He attends regional conferences on tropical medicine and primary care in francophone West Africa, maintaining his clinical currency across the diseases prevalent in Benin.

Dr. Akakpo's primary clinical focus is the diagnosis and management of tropical infectious diseases alongside chronic non-communicable diseases prevalent in urban Benin. He is experienced in malaria case management including severe malaria, typhoid fever treatment, and respiratory infection management. He monitors and manages patients with hypertension, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS in chronic disease clinics. He also performs vaccination services and minor surgical procedures. Dr. Akakpo places strong emphasis on patient education to support adherence to treatment and preventive health measures.

Dr. Akakpo is able to consult in French and English, making him accessible to international visitors, aid workers, and expatriates residing in Benin. CNHU Hubert Maga is the most advanced medical facility in the country and accepts international patients. Visitors are advised to contact the hospital administration in advance. Dr. Akakpo can advise on pre-travel health preparation for those planning to visit Benin, including malaria prophylaxis and recommended vaccinations.

Dr. Akakpo has been recognised by Ordre des Médecins du Bénin for his sustained contribution to primary care delivery in Cotonou. His community health education work, particularly around malaria prevention, has earned praise from public health authorities in Benin. He has served as a clinical supervisor for medical students from the University of Abomey-Calavi rotating through CNHU Hubert Maga.
