Dr. Amira Begović

Dr. Amira Begović is a medical oncologist at the Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo (KCUS), Bosnia and Herzegovina's leading academic hospital. With 15 years of clinical oncology experience, she has developed expertise in breast cancer and palliative oncology care.

The KCUS Clinic of Oncology provides the full spectrum of medical oncology services for the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dr. Begović participates in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings and is committed to implementing international oncology guidelines in Bosnian clinical practice.

She completed an advanced oncology fellowship at the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, gaining exposure to European oncology protocols and palliative care approaches. She returned to Sarajevo where she established a structured palliative oncology service within the KCUS oncology clinic.

Dr. Begović is an ESMO member and works to bridge the gap between evidence-based European oncology guidelines and the realities of practice in Bosnia and Herzegovina's healthcare system. She is particularly committed to improving the quality of palliative care for advanced cancer patients.

Dr. Begović received her MD from the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Medicine in 2006. She completed her oncology residency at the KCUS Clinic of Oncology and undertook an advanced oncology fellowship at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria (2011–2012). Her PhD from the University of Sarajevo in 2015 focused on breast cancer outcomes and treatment patterns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is an ESMO member and is certified by the Medical Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina in clinical oncology.

Dr. Begović's primary clinical focus is breast oncology, with expertise in all stages and subtypes including early and metastatic disease. She designs and administers neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, HER2-targeted therapy, CDK4/6 inhibitors, and hormone therapy. She also treats lung, colorectal, ovarian cancer, and lymphoma. She leads the KCUS palliative oncology program, providing symptom management, pain control, and supportive care for advanced cancer patients. She collaborates with surgical and radiation oncology colleagues in multidisciplinary tumor boards.

Dr. Begović has published over 12 peer-reviewed articles in Bosnian and international oncology journals. Her research focuses on breast cancer epidemiology in Bosnia and Herzegovina, palliative care quality improvement, and oncology treatment patterns in post-conflict healthcare systems. She collaborates with oncologists in Austria and participates in Balkan oncology educational programs.

Dr. Begović speaks Bosnian and English and sees patients from Bosnia and Herzegovina's diaspora in Germany, Austria, the Nordic countries, and the United States. KCUS coordinates international patient oncology consultations. Video consultations are available for second opinions. She provides guidance to diaspora patients seeking oncology treatment in Bosnia and Herzegovina or assistance with treatment coordination in other European countries.

Dr. Begović received the Oncology Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina Award for Clinical Excellence in 2019. She was recognized by KCUS for her leadership in establishing the palliative oncology service. She has received ESMO recognition for her engagement in Balkan oncology education and quality improvement initiatives.
