Dr. Emir Halilović

Dr. Emir Halilović is a senior interventional cardiologist at the Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo (KCUS), Bosnia and Herzegovina's primary academic medical center and the largest hospital in the country. With 19 years of clinical experience, he is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's leading cardiologists.

The KCUS Clinic of Cardiology serves as the main cardiac referral center for the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, managing the full spectrum of cardiovascular disease from acute coronary syndromes to complex valvular heart disease. Dr. Halilović has been central to developing the interventional cardiology program at the clinic.

He completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at the University Hospital Graz in Austria, gaining expertise in complex coronary interventions and cardiac imaging in a high-volume Austrian center. Austria has been an important training destination for Bosnian physicians given geographical and historical ties.

Dr. Halilović is an ESC member and participates in Balkan cardiology educational networks. He is known for his precision in complex procedures and for his systematic approach to cardiovascular risk factor management.

Dr. Halilović graduated from the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Medicine in 2002. He completed his cardiology residency at the KCUS Clinic of Cardiology and undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship at the University Hospital Graz (LKH-Univ. Klinikum Graz), Austria (2007–2008). His PhD from the University of Sarajevo in 2011 focused on primary PCI outcomes in Bosnian STEMI patients. He is a member of the European Society of Cardiology and is certified by the Medical Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina in internal medicine and cardiology.

Dr. Halilović specializes in interventional cardiology including primary PCI for acute MI, elective coronary angioplasty, and stent implantation. He performs comprehensive echocardiography and manages heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and valvular heart disease. He coordinates with cardiac surgeons for complex valvular and surgical revascularization decisions and manages the full spectrum of ischemic heart disease from stable angina to acute coronary syndromes.

Dr. Halilović has published over 15 peer-reviewed articles in Bosnian and international cardiology journals. His research focuses on primary PCI outcomes, cardiovascular risk factors in the Bosnian population, and the development of interventional cardiology services in post-conflict healthcare systems. He collaborates with cardiologists in Austria and participates in Balkan cardiology research networks.

Dr. Halilović speaks Bosnian and English and provides cardiology consultations for patients from Bosnia and Herzegovina's large diaspora, primarily in Germany, Austria, Sweden, and Switzerland. Many diaspora Bosnians return to Sarajevo for specialist medical consultations and find that KCUS offers European-comparable cardiology quality at significantly lower cost. The Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo coordinates international patient consultations. Video consultations are available for pre-procedure cardiac assessment and second opinions on coronary disease management. Dr. Halilović received the Bosnian Society of Cardiology Award for Clinical Excellence in 2016, recognising his leadership in building the KCUS interventional cardiology programme. He was acknowledged by the Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo for his contribution to establishing the cardiac catheterisation laboratory and training junior cardiologists in interventional techniques. He holds a PhD from the University of Sarajevo and contributes to cardiology teaching at the Faculty of Medicine, training successive generations of Bosnian cardiologists. He has received European Society of Cardiology recognition for his participation in Balkan cardiology development and educational programmes promoting cardiovascular care standards across the region.
