Dr. Kagiso Molefe

Dr. Kagiso Molefe is a consultant physician in internal medicine at Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana's largest and oldest public hospital and the country's principal referral centre in Gaborone. With 15 years of specialist experience, Dr. Molefe has developed deep expertise in managing the complex, often overlapping medical conditions that define the health burden in Botswana — a country that has navigated one of the world's most significant HIV epidemics while also contending with rising rates of non-communicable diseases driven by lifestyle changes.

Botswana's national antiretroviral therapy programme, launched in the early 2000s, was among the first and most comprehensive in sub-Saharan Africa, and Dr. Molefe has been a clinical practitioner within this system for most of his career. He manages patients across all stages of HIV infection, including those with complex treatment histories, drug resistance, and HIV-related organ complications such as HIV-associated nephropathy and HIV cardiomyopathy.

Beyond HIV, Dr. Molefe manages a broad general internal medicine caseload encompassing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and tuberculosis co-infection. He evaluates and treats HIV-related opportunistic infections including cryptococcal meningitis, PCP pneumonia, and toxoplasmosis. In cardiovascular medicine, he manages hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and lipid disorders. He is skilled in diagnostic procedures including lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, abdominal paracentesis, and bone marrow aspiration. He also manages complex diabetes cases with multi-system complications and coordinates with nephrology for patients with progressive chronic kidney disease.
