Dr. Miguel Srougi

Dr. Miguel Srougi is one of Brazil's most distinguished urologists and the country's leading authority on prostate cancer diagnosis and surgical treatment. With over 35 years of clinical practice divided between Hospital Sírio-Libanês and the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Medicine, he has trained generations of Brazilian urologists and established Brazil's evidence base for PSA-based prostate cancer screening and management.

He completed his urology residency and subsequent PhD at USP, then undertook subspecialty training in uro-oncology in France and the United States. Returning to Brazil, he built one of South America's highest-volume radical prostatectomy programs at Hospital Sírio-Libanês — São Paulo's most prestigious private hospital, internationally recognized for oncology care.

Dr. Srougi is widely credited with championing PSA screening programmes in Brazil and publishing foundational data on the epidemiology and surgical outcomes of prostate cancer in the Brazilian population. His research has shaped Brazilian urological guidelines for two decades. He has mentored over 200 urology residents and fellows at USP, and his surgical technique instructional publications are used across Latin American urology training programs.

Dr. Srougi completed his medical degree and urology residency at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) Faculty of Medicine, one of Latin America's foremost academic medical centers. He earned his PhD from USP with research on outcomes of radical prostatectomy for localized prostate cancer. He undertook uro-oncology fellowships at Institut Gustave Roussy in Paris and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York — two globally recognized oncology institutions. He is a full professor in the Department of Surgery (Urology Division) at USP Faculty of Medicine, and holds emeritus status at Hospital Sírio-Libanês.

Dr. Srougi's core clinical expertise is uro-oncology, with particular depth in prostate cancer. He performs radical prostatectomy by open retropubic technique and by laparoscopic approach, with meticulous neurovascular bundle preservation to optimize functional outcomes including urinary continence and erectile function. He manages the full prostate cancer pathway from PSA screening and guided biopsy through staging, multidisciplinary decision-making, surgery, and post-operative surveillance.

In bladder cancer, he performs radical cystectomy with urinary diversion including ileal conduit and orthotopic neobladder. In kidney cancer, he performs open and laparoscopic radical and partial nephrectomy. He also manages complex upper urinary tract stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) requiring surgery, and urinary incontinence, providing a full-spectrum urology service beyond his oncological focus.

Dr. Srougi consults in Portuguese, English, and Spanish and regularly receives international patients from across Latin America and the Portuguese-speaking world for prostate cancer second opinions and surgical management.
