Dr. Nikolai Dimitrov

Dr. Nikolai Dimitrov is a neurologist at UMBAL Alexandrovska University Hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria's premier academic medical center. With 19 years of clinical practice in neurology, he has developed expertise in acute stroke care, epilepsy management, and movement disorders including Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Dimitrov completed a clinical neurology fellowship at the University Hospital Vienna's Department of Neurology, gaining advanced training in stroke unit protocols and Parkinson's disease management. He returned to Bulgaria where he helped establish the hospital's dedicated stroke unit and acute thrombolysis program.

He is a member of the European Academy of Neurology and participates in the Bulgarian national stroke registry. His multidisciplinary approach integrates neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and rehabilitation medicine to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex neurological conditions.

Dr. Dimitrov is known for his meticulous diagnostic approach and his ability to communicate complex neurological diagnoses clearly to patients and families. He is an associate professor at the Medical University of Sofia and supervises neurology residents.

Dr. Dimitrov graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 2002. He completed his neurology residency at UMBAL Alexandrovska University Hospital and undertook a clinical neurology fellowship at the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Vienna, Austria (2007–2008). His PhD from the Medical University of Sofia in 2011 focused on acute stroke outcome predictors and the efficacy of thrombolysis in clinical practice. He is a member of the European Academy of Neurology and is certified by the Bulgarian Medical Union in neurology.

Dr. Dimitrov manages acute and chronic neurological conditions across a broad spectrum. In stroke medicine, he leads thrombolysis decisions for acute ischemic stroke and coordinates with interventional neuroradiologists for mechanical thrombectomy cases. In epilepsy, he evaluates seizure disorders, prescribes and monitors antiepileptic drug therapy, and interprets video-EEG monitoring. In movement disorders, he manages Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, and performs botulinum toxin injections for spasticity and dystonia. He also manages multiple sclerosis and headache disorders including complex migraine.

Dr. Dimitrov has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles in journals including the European Journal of Neurology and Neurological Sciences. His research focuses on stroke outcomes, predictors of post-stroke disability, and the epidemiology of epilepsy in Bulgaria. He collaborates with neurological centers in Vienna and contributes data to European stroke and epilepsy registries.

Dr. Dimitrov speaks Bulgarian, Russian, and English and has experience treating international patients from Russia, neighboring Balkan countries, and Western Europe.
