Dr. Boukary Ouédraogo

Dr. Boukary Ouédraogo is a senior general surgeon at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Souro Sanou (CHU-SS) in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso's second-largest city and the economic and cultural hub of the country's south-west. CHU Souro Sanou is one of Burkina Faso's two major teaching hospitals and serves as the principal referral centre for the Hauts-Bassins, Cascades, and Sud-Ouest regions, covering a catchment population of several million people.

With nearly two decades of surgical experience, Dr. Ouédraogo is one of the most experienced surgeons in western Burkina Faso. His practice is characterised by the breadth and urgency that define surgery in a resource-limited sub-Saharan African setting. He manages a high volume of emergency surgical cases — appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, and trauma injuries — which arrive at CHU-SS from across the region, often at advanced stages due to delayed presentation and limited transport infrastructure.

Dr. Ouédraogo also performs planned abdominal and endocrine surgery, and is one of the few surgeons in the Bobo-Dioulasso region experienced in thyroid surgery. He is a faculty member for surgical training at the CHU-SS and participates in the Université Nazi Boni's medical education programme.

Dr. Ouédraogo completed his Doctorat en Médecine at the UFR/SDS of the Université de Ouagadougou (now Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo). He undertook his surgical residency at CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo in Ouagadougou before joining CHU Souro Sanou in Bobo-Dioulasso, where he completed his Diplôme de Spécialité en Chirurgie Générale. He undertook an advanced surgical training attachment at the Hôpital Lariboisière in Paris, France, focusing on gastrointestinal and endocrine surgery. He is a member of the Société Ouest-Africaine de Chirurgie and participates in its regional surgical skills training activities.

Dr. Ouédraogo performs the full spectrum of general surgical procedures with particular strength in abdominal emergency surgery. He performs emergency laparotomy for peritonitis, intestinal perforation (including typhoid perforation, which is common in Burkina Faso), and bowel obstruction. He carries out appendectomy, hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, and incisional), cholecystectomy, and bowel resection and anastomosis. In trauma surgery, he manages penetrating and blunt abdominal injuries, including damage control laparotomy. He performs thyroidectomy for goitre and thyroid nodules, soft tissue tumour excision, and minor urological procedures including urethral catheter management and hydrocele repair.

Dr. Ouédraogo has contributed to surgical publications and presentations examining the management of typhoid intestinal perforation in West African hospital settings — a condition with significant morbidity and mortality in the region. He has presented at the Société Ouest-Africaine de Chirurgie's congresses and at Burkina Faso's national medical conferences. Within CHU Souro Sanou, he leads internal surgical audit programmes and has co-authored departmental protocols on perioperative care and surgical infection prevention.

Dr. Ouédraogo consults in French and Mooré. Bobo-Dioulasso is Burkina Faso's second city and receives patients from across the western and southern regions of the country as well as from Mali and Côte d'Ivoire. Diaspora patients from France, Italy, and North America visiting family in Bobo-Dioulasso have access to Dr. Ouédraogo's services at CHU Souro Sanou. He is familiar with reviewing international medical records and can provide pre-operative assessments for patients who have received initial evaluation overseas and require planned surgical intervention in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Ouédraogo is one of the most senior and respected surgeons at CHU Souro Sanou, where he serves as a key clinical leader in the surgical department. He is a member of the Société Ouest-Africaine de Chirurgie and an active participant in the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Médecins du Burkina Faso. He has been recognised for his nearly two decades of contributions to surgical care in western Burkina Faso and his long-standing role in surgical training at the CHU-SS.
