Dr. Issa Traoré

Dr. Issa Traoré is a general practitioner at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Yalgado Ouédraogo (CHU-YO), Burkina Faso's largest and most important public teaching hospital in Ouagadougou. Over a career of 17 years, Dr. Traoré has served one of West Africa's most health-challenged populations, working within a healthcare system that faces significant resource constraints while confronting an immense disease burden driven by endemic malaria, nutritional deficiencies, and an increasingly prevalent burden of non-communicable diseases.

Dr. Traoré's practice is shaped by the realities of medicine in the Sahel. Malaria, which is hyper-endemic in Burkina Faso and responsible for a significant proportion of childhood and adult mortality, features prominently in his daily caseload. He is experienced in identifying and managing complicated malaria, including severe forms requiring inpatient management, as well as meningococcal meningitis — a disease with epidemic potential in the meningitis belt region of which Burkina Faso is a part.

Dr. Traoré also manages the growing burden of hypertension and diabetes among Ouagadougou's urban population and is committed to health education in both French and Mooré to reach patients across Burkina Faso's diverse language communities.

Dr. Traoré completed his medical degree (Doctorat en Médecine) at the Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou, formerly the Université de Ouagadougou, which houses Burkina Faso's main medical school, the Unité de Formation et de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (UFR/SDS). He completed his general medicine training through the national residency programme at CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo. He has undertaken continuing medical education in tropical medicine and malaria case management through WHO and Roll Back Malaria partnership programmes, and has attended regional primary care conferences organised by the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Médecins du Burkina Faso.

Dr. Traoré provides comprehensive primary care consultations addressing Burkina Faso's dominant disease burden. He is highly experienced in diagnosing and treating malaria at all levels of severity, including management of severe malaria complications such as cerebral malaria and severe anaemia. He manages typhoid fever, cholera (during outbreak periods), bacterial meningitis, and common respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. In chronic disease care, he manages hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and chronic respiratory conditions. He conducts antenatal primary care reviews, childhood growth monitoring, and vaccination clinics. He performs malaria rapid diagnostic testing, wound assessment and care, and minor procedures in the outpatient setting.

Dr. Traoré is primarily dedicated to clinical service in one of Burkina Faso's busiest public hospitals. He has participated in national disease surveillance activities coordinated by the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health and has contributed to internal audit work on malaria management protocols at CHU-YO. He is engaged in continuing medical education as both a learner and a peer facilitator, sharing clinical experiences relevant to Burkina Faso's specific disease context with junior colleagues and medical students rotating through the hospital.

Dr. Traoré consults in French and Mooré, the most widely spoken indigenous language in Burkina Faso. French-speaking diaspora patients from Europe, North America, and the wider francophone world visiting Ouagadougou will find him accessible and communicative. CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo serves patients from across Burkina Faso and occasionally from neighbouring Mali and Niger. Dr. Traoré is experienced in providing health advice for international visitors and diaspora returnees regarding malaria prophylaxis, food and water safety, and vaccination requirements for travel in the region.

Dr. Traoré has been recognised within CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo for his dedication to patient care and his engagement with junior staff and medical student teaching. He is an active member of the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Médecins du Burkina Faso and has been commended for his contributions to malaria case management improvement within the hospital's outpatient department.
