Dr. Marie Ntahomvukiye

Dr. Marie Ntahomvukiye is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist at CHU Kamenge in Bujumbura, one of Burundi's principal referral hospitals and a key centre for maternal health services in a country that has historically faced some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Over 13 years of specialist practice, Dr. Ntahomvukiye has dedicated her career to improving maternal and reproductive health outcomes in Burundi.

Burundi's maternal health challenges are significant and multifactorial: limited access to skilled birth attendants outside urban centres, high rates of anaemia in pregnancy, and a high burden of obstructed labour contribute to preventable maternal deaths. Dr. Ntahomvukiye works at the forefront of CHU Kamenge's efforts to manage these challenges, performing high volumes of caesarean sections and managing obstetric emergencies including postpartum haemorrhage and eclampsia.

She is also engaged in the management of obstetric fistula — a devastating condition resulting from obstructed labour that affects a disproportionate number of women in Burundi. While complex fistula repairs require specialist referral, she provides initial assessment, supportive care, and coordinates referrals within Burundi's fistula repair network. Dr. Ntahomvukiye is committed to training midwives and nurses in evidence-based obstetric care at CHU Kamenge.

Dr. Ntahomvukiye completed her Doctorat en Médecine at the Faculté de Médecine de l'Université du Burundi in Bujumbura. She subsequently undertook specialty training in Gynaecologie-Obstétrique through the national residency programme based at CHU Kamenge, earning her Diplôme de Spécialité en Gynécologie-Obstétrique. She completed a postgraduate training fellowship at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali in Rwanda, gaining experience in high-risk obstetrics and gynaecological surgery. She has completed additional training in obstetric fistula management through a programme supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in East Africa.

Dr. Ntahomvukiye provides comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological care. In obstetrics, she manages high-risk pregnancies including those complicated by severe anaemia (a common finding in Burundian women), pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and malpresentation. She performs caesarean sections, manages postpartum haemorrhage using medical and surgical methods, and conducts postpartum follow-up. In gynaecology, she performs diagnostic and therapeutic curettage, hysterectomy for benign indications, and management of uterine fibroids and cervical pathology. She provides initial assessment for obstetric fistula and coordinates specialist fistula repair referrals.

Dr. Ntahomvukiye is an active member of the Société Burundaise de Gynécologie-Obstétrique and has contributed to internal clinical audits on maternal mortality and caesarean section outcomes at CHU Kamenge. She has participated in UNFPA-coordinated data collection on obstetric fistula prevalence in Bujumbura and has presented her clinical observations at East African obstetrics and gynaecology regional conferences. Her work contributes to the evidence base for improving maternal health outcomes in Burundi.

Dr. Ntahomvukiye consults in French and Kirundi. She is accessible to Burundian diaspora women in Belgium, France, and Canada who seek gynaecological care during visits to Bujumbura. Her experience with the management of high-risk pregnancy and gynaecological conditions common in women of Central African origin is relevant to diaspora patients who may have been managed in overseas healthcare systems and are returning to Burundi. CHU Kamenge serves patients from across Burundi and occasionally from neighbouring Rwanda, Tanzania, and DRC. All consultations are conducted in-person.

Dr. Ntahomvukiye is recognised within CHU Kamenge for her dedication to obstetric care and her contributions to midwifery training. She is an active member of the Société Burundaise de Gynécologie-Obstétrique and has been acknowledged for her work in improving standards of emergency obstetric care and her engagement with the UNFPA's obstetric fistula prevention and treatment programme in Burundi.
