Dr. Vanna Chea

Dr. Vanna Chea is a cardiologist at Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh — Cambodia's longest-established public hospital with French colonial roots, now one of the country's main referral hospitals with a growing private wing. With 11 years of cardiology experience, he provides non-invasive cardiac assessment and general cardiology management for patients in Phnom Penh.

Dr. Chea trained at the University of Health Sciences Cambodia before completing cardiology training with French support — reflecting Cambodia's long-standing medical education relationship with France. He obtained a Certificate in Echocardiography from a French training program and has developed expertise in echocardiographic assessment of the conditions most prevalent in Cambodia: hypertensive heart disease, rheumatic valvular disease, and cardiomyopathy.

Cambodia's cardiology capacity is still developing and invasive interventional procedures are largely unavailable domestically, with complex cases referred to Bangkok or Phnom Penh's international hospitals. Dr. Chea's practice accordingly focuses on non-invasive diagnosis, medical management, and timely identification of patients requiring referral for intervention.

Dr. Chea earned his MD from the University of Health Sciences Cambodia. He completed his cardiology training and Diploma in Cardiology, with additional training in France through the Cambodian-French medical education program. He holds a Certificate in Echocardiography from training at a French cardiology centre.

He has participated in continuing cardiology education through the Cambodian Society of Cardiology and regional cardiac association programs in Thailand and Vietnam.

Dr. Chea's clinical focus is non-invasive cardiology. He performs and interprets transthoracic echocardiography for assessment of ventricular function, valvular heart disease including rheumatic mitral stenosis and regurgitation, cardiomyopathies, and pericardial disease.

His general cardiology practice manages hypertension — highly prevalent in Cambodia — heart failure with medical optimization, atrial fibrillation including anticoagulation, and coronary artery disease risk stratification. He performs ECG interpretation, Holter monitoring, and exercise stress testing.

For patients requiring coronary angiography or intervention, he coordinates referrals to Bangkok-based centres through Calmette Hospital's international referral pathways.

Dr. Chea is focused on clinical cardiology practice in Cambodia. He contributes to Cambodian Medical Association and Cambodian Society of Cardiology continuing education activities and participates in regional cardiology conferences in Southeast Asia.

Dr. Chea consults international patients at Calmette Hospital's private wing. He consults in Khmer, French, and English. His French language proficiency makes him particularly accessible to French-speaking expatriates and NGO workers in Cambodia.
