Dr. Alphonse Tchouake

Dr. Alphonse Tchouake is a senior cardiologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Yaoundé (CHU de Yaoundé), Cameroon's leading public teaching hospital and the primary centre for cardiology specialist care in the country. With over 22 years of experience, Dr. Tchouake is one of the most senior and respected cardiologists in Cameroon, having played a formative role in establishing and developing the CHU de Yaoundé's cardiology department and its capabilities for invasive cardiac procedures.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally and is a rapidly growing clinical priority in sub-Saharan Africa including Cameroon, where hypertension, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and — increasingly — coronary artery disease contribute to significant morbidity and premature mortality. Dr. Tchouake's long career has evolved alongside this changing landscape, and he has worked to develop the technical infrastructure and clinical expertise within CHU de Yaoundé to address conditions that previously could only be managed abroad.

Dr. Tchouake is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and is active in the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, contributing to the development of cardiology across the continent. He is a faculty member at the Université de Yaoundé I and has trained a generation of Cameroonian cardiologists.

Dr. Tchouake completed his Doctorat en Médecine at the Faculté de Médecine et des Sciences Biomédicales of the Université de Yaoundé I. He undertook his cardiology residency at CHU de Yaoundé and subsequently completed advanced fellowship training in interventional cardiology at the Hôpital Bichat-Claude Bernard in Paris and at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, earning his Diplôme de Spécialité en Cardiologie from a French university partnership programme. He was awarded Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in recognition of his professional contributions to cardiology. He participates regularly in European Society of Cardiology annual congresses and Pan-African Society of Cardiology scientific meetings.

Dr. Tchouake provides comprehensive cardiology services including both invasive and non-invasive diagnostics and treatment. He performs echocardiography (transthoracic and transoesophageal), cardiac stress testing, Holter monitoring, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. In interventional cardiology, he carries out coronary angiography, cardiac catheterisation, and pacemaker implantation. He manages heart failure (including advanced heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction), valvular heart disease (including rheumatic mitral stenosis, which remains prevalent in Cameroon), arrhythmias, hypertensive heart disease, and coronary artery disease. He provides pre-operative cardiac risk assessment for patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery.

Dr. Tchouake has an active research profile and has published in African and international cardiology journals, focusing on the epidemiology and clinical management of heart failure, hypertensive cardiomyopathy, and rheumatic heart disease in the Cameroonian context. He has presented at the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, and the World Congress of Cardiology. He serves on the editorial boards of Central African medical journals and has been a principal investigator in multi-site African cardiology studies coordinated through the Pan-African Society of Cardiology research network.

Dr. Tchouake is fluent in both French and English, making him accessible to Cameroon's entire diaspora community across Europe and North America. His European training and FESC fellowship give diaspora patients confidence in a level of cardiology expertise benchmarked against international standards. CHU de Yaoundé's cardiology facilities, which Dr. Tchouake has helped to develop, include echocardiography, coronary angiography, and pacemaker implantation — making Yaoundé a genuine option for cardiac specialist care in Central Africa. He regularly receives referrals from cardiologists in neighbouring countries for complex cases that cannot be managed locally.

Dr. Tchouake is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and an active member of the Pan-African Society of Cardiology and the Société Camerounaise de Cardiologie, where he has served in leadership positions. He holds faculty rank at the Université de Yaoundé I Faculty of Medicine and has received recognition from the Ordre National des Médecins du Cameroun for over two decades of distinguished service to cardiology in Cameroon. He is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern cardiology in the country.
