Dr. Jean-Pierre Gbangou

Dr. Jean-Pierre Gbangou is a dermatologist at Hôpital de l'Amitié in Bangui — one of the Central African Republic's main public referral hospitals. With 10 years of dermatology practice in one of the world's most challenging healthcare environments, he provides specialist skin care in a country where tropical infectious diseases dominate the dermatological case mix.

The Central African Republic carries an extraordinary burden of neglected tropical diseases including leprosy, Buruli ulcer, and cutaneous leishmaniasis, alongside high rates of HIV with its associated dermatological manifestations. Dr. Gbangou's clinical practice is shaped entirely by this tropical and resource-limited context, requiring expert diagnostic ability from clinical examination alone — laboratory and histopathological resources are limited and must be used strategically.

He trained in France at the Faculté de Médecine Paris VII through the cooperative programs that support CAR medical specialist training in Paris. He returned to Bangui committed to applying French-standard dermatology practice to the CAR's disease environment. He is one of a very small number of certified dermatologists practicing in the country, making his role critically important for the CAR's specialist skin disease management capacity.

Dr. Gbangou completed his Doctorat en Médecine at the Université de Bangui's Faculty of Health Sciences — the CAR's national medical training institution. He was selected for specialist training under the bilateral French-CAR medical education cooperative, completing his DES (Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées) in Dermatologie-Vénéréologie at the Faculté de Médecine Paris VII.

He gained additional tropical dermatology experience through the Institut de Médecine Tropicale in Paris, where he developed expertise in diagnosing and managing the neglected tropical diseases prevalent in Central Africa. He is a member of the Société Africaine de Dermatologie et de Vénérologie (SADV) and contributes to continuing dermatology education in the CAR.

Dr. Gbangou's dermatological practice is grounded in the tropical and infectious dermatology most relevant to the CAR's disease burden. Leprosy — still clinically active in the CAR — requires expert clinical diagnosis and multidrug therapy management, which Dr. Gbangou oversees. Buruli ulcer caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans demands early clinical recognition and appropriate antibiotic and wound management, areas where his expertise is critical.

He manages HIV-associated skin conditions including Kaposi's sarcoma, HIV-related infections, and immune reconstitution dermatitis in patients on antiretroviral therapy. Sexually transmitted infections including syphilis, gonorrhea, and genital warts are managed within his venereology scope. He performs skin biopsies, lesion excision, cryotherapy for warts and superficial lesions, and patch testing for contact dermatitis. For common conditions including scabies, tinea infections, and eczema, he provides evidence-based management adapted to the availability of medications in Bangui.

Dr. Gbangou consults in French and Sango — the two official languages of the Central African Republic. He is accessible to patients from neighboring Cameroon, Chad, the DRC, and the Republic of Congo who occasionally seek specialist care in Bangui. International NGO workers, UN personnel, and diplomats stationed in Bangui also seek his services for dermatological conditions.

Given the CAR's limited specialist resources, Dr. Gbangou works collaboratively with organizations such as MSF and other international health partners active in the country. For complex cases requiring histopathology or advanced treatments not available in Bangui, he assists with referrals to facilities in Yaoundé, Cameroon or Paris, France.

Dr. Gbangou is recognized within the CAR's medical community as one of the country's few certified dermatologists and as a leader in tropical dermatology practice in Bangui. He has contributed to national leprosy control program activities and participates in SADV regional activities. He has presented clinical cases at the Société Africaine de Dermatologie et de Vénérologie's scientific meetings, focusing on neglected tropical skin diseases in Central Africa. His work contributes to maintaining dermatological specialist capacity in one of Africa's most under-resourced healthcare settings.
