About Prof. Zhang
Prof. Zhang Ming is a Professor of Medical Oncology at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Centre (FUSCC) — China's largest dedicated cancer hospital and one of the highest-volume cancer centres in the world. With 28 years in oncology, he is a nationally recognized authority in breast cancer and integrative oncology, blending evidence-based systemic therapy with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) supportive approaches.
After his medical and doctoral training at Fudan University, Prof. Zhang completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, gaining deep expertise in clinical trial design and novel breast cancer therapeutics. He returned to FUSCC as a faculty member and has built a breast oncology program that treats thousands of patients annually.
Prof. Zhang is a pioneer in China's adoption of integrative oncology — a discipline that incorporates evidence-based TCM alongside conventional chemotherapy and immunotherapy to reduce treatment toxicity and improve quality of life. He leads FUSCC's integrative oncology research group and has published internationally recognized studies on TCM herb-drug interactions in cancer patients.
His patients include Chinese nationals from across the country as well as international patients from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and overseas Chinese communities seeking access to FUSCC's clinical trial portfolio and high-volume breast oncology expertise.
Education & Training
Prof. Zhang earned his MD and PhD from Fudan University Shanghai Medical College. He completed his oncology residency and fellowship at FUSCC before undertaking a postdoctoral research fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Breast Medical Oncology, Houston, USA.
He is board-certified in Medical Oncology by the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology. Prof. Zhang has been a visiting professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Institut Gustave Roussy, Paris, and serves as adjunct faculty at the MD Anderson Global Program in China.
Clinical Expertise & Procedures
Prof. Zhang's primary subspecialty is breast oncology, encompassing all subtypes: luminal A and B (hormone receptor-positive), HER2-positive, and triple-negative breast cancer. He is experienced with CDK4/6 inhibitors, HER2-targeted agents (trastuzumab, pertuzumab, T-DM1, trastuzumab deruxtecan), PARP inhibitors, and immune checkpoint inhibitors for appropriate breast cancer subtypes.
His integrative oncology practice uses validated TCM formulations to ameliorate chemotherapy toxicities including myelosuppression, nausea, fatigue, and peripheral neuropathy, supported by clinical evidence. He works with licensed TCM physicians within FUSCC's integrative oncology department.
He also treats gynaecological malignancies including ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancer, and coordinates multidisciplinary tumour board discussions for complex cases requiring combined surgical, radiation, and systemic therapy planning.
Research & Publications
Prof. Zhang has authored over 120 publications in journals including the Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Cancer Research. His pivotal contributions include landmark studies on neoadjuvant therapy optimization in triple-negative breast cancer and prospective clinical trials on integrative oncology supportive care in Chinese cancer patients.
He has been principal investigator on China-based arms of global phase III breast cancer trials and leads the FUSCC Early Drug Development Unit. He is a member of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology's (CSCO) breast cancer guidelines expert panel and contributes to national oncology treatment recommendations.
International Patient Services
Prof. Zhang sees international patients at FUSCC's dedicated international oncology clinic. He consults in Mandarin and English, and the centre provides certified interpreters for Arabic, Russian, and other languages.
FUSCC is Asia's highest-volume cancer centre and offers access to China-specific clinical trials not available elsewhere, including novel immunotherapy combinations and integrative oncology protocols. International patients from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and overseas Chinese communities travel to Shanghai for breast cancer treatment.
Video consultations are available for oncology second opinions, allowing international patients to share pathology, molecular profiling, and imaging results for expert review before deciding on treatment pathways. The FUSCC international patient office provides comprehensive coordination support.
Awards & Recognition
Prof. Zhang received the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology's Lifetime Achievement in Breast Cancer Research Award and has been named one of China's most cited oncology researchers. He received the Shanghai Municipal Government's Outstanding Medical Expert Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award for his contributions to breast cancer clinical research.
He serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Oncology (Asian edition) and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. He is a standing committee member of the CSCO and a council member of the Asian Breast Cancer Cooperative Group.
