Dr. Florent Nganga-Bakala

Dr. Florent Nganga-Bakala is a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Brazzaville — the Republic of Congo's principal public teaching hospital and its foremost tertiary medical institution. With 14 years of specialist practice, Dr. Nganga-Bakala is among the very few certified endocrinologists practising in the Republic of Congo, addressing an acute need in a country experiencing a rapidly escalating epidemic of type 2 diabetes and thyroid disorders.

The Republic of Congo's epidemiological profile is transitioning rapidly from communicable to non-communicable disease dominance, driven by urbanisation, changing diets, and population growth. Diabetes prevalence is rising sharply in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, and access to specialist metabolic care outside the capital remains nearly non-existent. Dr. Nganga-Bakala manages a large and complex patient panel, including patients with advanced diabetic complications — neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and diabetic foot ulcers — often presenting late due to delayed diagnosis.

Thyroid disorders, including endemic goitre historically linked to iodine deficiency in interior regions, Graves' hyperthyroidism, and thyroid nodules, also represent a significant portion of Dr. Nganga-Bakala's practice. He trained in France and brings French academic standards of endocrinological care to the Congolese health system, working within significant resource constraints.

He teaches endocrinology at the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé, Université Marien Ngouabi, and is an active member of the Société Francophone du Diabète.

Dr. Nganga-Bakala completed his medical degree (Docteur en Médecine) at the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé, Université Marien Ngouabi in Brazzaville. He undertook his specialist training in France, completing his Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) in Endocrinology-Diabetology at the Université de Montpellier, training at the CHU de Montpellier's endocrinology department. He returned to the Republic of Congo committed to establishing a structured endocrinology and diabetology service at CHU de Brazzaville. He participates in the Société Francophone du Diabète's continuing medical education network and has attended AFRADIAB (African Diabetes Association) conferences.

Dr. Nganga-Bakala's endocrinology practice covers the full spectrum of metabolic and endocrine disorders. In diabetes management, he initiates and optimises insulin therapy (basal, premixed, and basal-bolus regimens), manages type 1 diabetes with intensive insulin protocols, and evaluates and manages all major diabetic complications. For diabetic foot disease, he works with surgeons and wound care nurses to prevent amputation. He interprets oral glucose tolerance tests and HbA1c results and provides structured diabetes education.

For thyroid disease, he manages hypothyroidism with levothyroxine replacement, hyperthyroidism with antithyroid drugs (carbimazole, propylthiouracil), and evaluates thyroid nodules including coordination of fine needle aspiration. He manages metabolic syndrome, obesity, and adrenal insufficiency. He coordinates with nephrology for diabetic kidney disease and with ophthalmology for diabetic retinopathy screening.

CHU de Brazzaville is the Republic of Congo's principal referral hospital and serves patients from across the country as well as from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dr. Nganga-Bakala consults in French and Lingala. Congolese diaspora from France and Belgium visiting Brazzaville may access specialist endocrinology consultations through his outpatient clinic. For complex investigations or procedures not available in Brazzaville, referrals to Kinshasa, Abidjan, Dakar, or France are coordinated.

Dr. Nganga-Bakala has been recognised by the Société Congolaise d'Endocrinologie et de Diabétologie for his contributions to diabetes care capacity building in the Republic of Congo. He was commended by the Société Francophone du Diabète for his participation in its Central African diabetes epidemiology monitoring network and for his advocacy for improved insulin access and diabetes supplies in the Republic of Congo. He teaches endocrinology at the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé, Université Marien Ngouabi, and participates in AFRADIAB (African Diabetes Association) conference activities, contributing to the pan-African dialogue on improving diabetes care in resource-limited settings.
