Dr. Rosalie Nkounkou

Dr. Rosalie Nkounkou is an obstetrician-gynaecologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Brazzaville — the Republic of Congo's main university teaching hospital and the leading referral centre for complex obstetric and gynaecological cases in the country. Over 14 years, she has provided comprehensive maternal and gynaecological care in a country with significant unmet needs in women's health. Dr. Nkounkou manages high volumes of deliveries, complex obstetric emergencies, and gynaecological conditions requiring surgical intervention. She is fluent in French, Lingala, and Kituba — three of the main languages spoken in Brazzaville — enabling her to communicate effectively with patients from across the country's diverse linguistic communities. She participates in WHO-supported safe motherhood initiatives in the Republic of Congo and contributes to the clinical training of obstetric nursing staff and junior doctors at CHU de Brazzaville.

Dr. Nkounkou obtained her Docteur en Médecine from Université Marien Ngouabi in Brazzaville and completed a DES (Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées) in Gynaecology-Obstetrics through the West and Central African inter-university specialist training network. Her training included rotations at major obstetric units in the region, where she developed competencies in caesarean section, operative vaginal delivery, and gynaecological laparoscopy. She has participated in WHO training on emergency obstetric care and in FIGO-endorsed continuing education programmes.

Dr. Nkounkou is skilled in all aspects of obstetric care including normal and high-risk delivery management, caesarean section, and emergency obstetric interventions such as management of postpartum haemorrhage and eclampsia. In gynaecology, she performs hysterectomy, laparoscopic procedures for fibroids and ovarian cysts, and colposcopy for cervical dysplasia. She provides antenatal screening and counselling and manages gynaecological oncology referrals in coordination with oncology colleagues at CHU de Brazzaville.

Dr. Nkounkou consults in French, which is accessible to French-speaking visitors and to many internationally based professionals. International patients in Brazzaville can access gynaecological and obstetric care at CHU de Brazzaville or through private clinics. While the hospital's international patient infrastructure is limited compared to West African medical hubs, Dr. Nkounkou is experienced in coordinating care with overseas treating physicians and in providing referral documentation for patients who require higher-level care abroad.

Dr. Nkounkou has received recognition from the Société Congolaise de Gynécologie-Obstétrique for her sustained service and clinical contributions to women's health in the Republic of Congo. She has been commended by CHU de Brazzaville for her leadership in emergency obstetric care management and for her participation in regional WHO safe motherhood training initiatives. She is a member of FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) through the Société Congolaise de Gynécologie-Obstétrique and has participated in FIGO-endorsed continuing education programmes.
