Dr. Lydia Joseph-Martin

Dr. Lydia Joseph-Martin is a physician with specialist training in internal medicine and rheumatology, practising at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau — Dominica's main public hospital and the island's primary site for specialist medical care. With 12 years of clinical experience, Dr. Joseph-Martin is one of the very few rheumatology-trained physicians serving a small island nation of approximately 70,000 people.

Rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout are prevalent in the Caribbean, partly related to the high rates of hypertension, obesity, and genetic predispositions in the regional population. Dr. Joseph-Martin manages inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis) with DMARD therapy including methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine, sulfasalazine, and leflunomide, and initiates biologic therapy (TNF inhibitors, IL-6 inhibitors, JAK inhibitors) where appropriate.

In lupus (SLE), she manages mild-to-moderate disease with hydroxychloroquine, steroids, and azathioprine, and coordinates nephrology input for lupus nephritis. She manages gout with urate-lowering therapy and acute attacks with colchicine and NSAIDs.
