Dr. Aurelio Nguema Obiang

Dr. Aurelio Nguema Obiang is an emergency physician at Hospital General de Malabo — the principal public hospital on Bioko Island and the main referral facility for Equatorial Guinea's island capital. In trauma, he performs primary and secondary surveys using ATLS principles, manages haemorrhagic shock with fluid resuscitation and blood transfusion, performs chest needle decompression and thoracostomy for tension pneumothorax, and carries out wound assessment and closure. He manages severe malaria with IV artesunate or quinine where artesunate is unavailable, including management of cerebral malaria with seizure control and fluid resuscitation. He manages acute respiratory failure with oxygen therapy and where available, mechanical ventilation support.

Hospital General de Malabo sees significant numbers of international oil industry workers and business personnel from the hydrocarbon sector that drives Equatorial Guinea's economy. Dr. Nguema Obiang consults in Spanish and French. For complex cases requiring specialist care beyond Malabo's capacity, the hospital coordinates medical evacuation to Cameroon, Spain, or South Africa.
