Dr. Miriam Tesfaye

Dr. Miriam Tesfaye is an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Orotta National Referral Hospital in Asmara — Eritrea's largest hospital and the country's primary referral centre for complex obstetric and gynaecological care. With 8 years of clinical experience in a resource-limited East African setting, she is one of Eritrea's specialist physicians contributing to the improvement of maternal health outcomes.

Eritrea is a small country in the Horn of Africa facing significant healthcare challenges, with limited specialist physician availability and a high burden of maternal mortality. Specialist obstetricians like Dr. Tesfaye are critically important to the healthcare system, managing cases that in wealthier countries would be distributed across many more specialists.

She manages both routine obstetric care and complex emergencies including obstructed labour, postpartum haemorrhage, and severe preeclampsia, working in a resource-constrained environment that demands clinical creativity and adaptability. She is particularly committed to safe motherhood initiatives and antenatal care access for rural Eritrean women.

Dr. Tesfaye completed her medical degree at Orotta School of Medicine in Asmara — Eritrea's principal medical school, established to train the country's healthcare workforce. She completed her obstetrics and gynaecology specialty residency at Orotta National Referral Hospital, the only facility capable of training OB/GYN specialists in Eritrea. She has participated in WHO and UNFPA safe motherhood training programmes and has received skills training through international emergency obstetric care (EmOC) courses.

Dr. Tesfaye's clinical practice encompasses the full range of obstetric care from antenatal to postnatal. She manages high-risk pregnancies including hypertensive disorders, haemorrhage risk, and multiple pregnancies. She is trained in emergency obstetric interventions including manual removal of placenta, vacuum extraction, and management of postpartum haemorrhage with uterotonics and surgical repair.

For routine and emergency caesarean sections, she provides surgical delivery in a setting where access to blood products and intensive care is limited, requiring careful pre-operative risk assessment. In gynaecology, she performs basic surgical procedures including hysterectomy for obstetric emergencies and management of ectopic pregnancy.

She provides outpatient gynaecology services including PCOS management, fibroid assessment, and reproductive health consultations.

Eritrea's isolation and restricted access policies mean international patient services are very limited compared to most countries. However, Eritrean diaspora patients — returning from Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and North America, where large Eritrean communities have settled since the independence period — occasionally access specialist obstetric and gynaecological care at Orotta National Referral Hospital during extended visits home.

International NGO workers, UN personnel, and embassy staff posted to Asmara may also require obstetric or gynaecological consultation during their deployment. Dr. Tesfaye consults in Tigrinya, Arabic, and English, making her accessible to the broadest possible range of patients. Orotta National Referral Hospital functions as the country's primary specialist referral centre, and Dr. Tesfaye provides the most accessible obstetrics and gynaecology service available within Eritrea.

Dr. Tesfaye has been recognised by the Eritrean Medical Association for her dedication to maternal health services in Eritrea. She has participated in WHO and UNFPA safe motherhood training programmes and is a committed contributor to Eritrea's maternal mortality reduction efforts. She is an active member of the East African Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
