Dr. Mart Kallas

Dr. Mart Kallas is a senior interventional cardiologist at the North Estonia Medical Centre (PERH) in Tallinn, Estonia's largest hospital and the country's primary cardiovascular referral center. With 18 years of clinical experience, he is among Estonia's leading cardiologists.

Estonia is world-renowned for its digital health infrastructure — the country has pioneered e-health records, digital prescriptions, and remote monitoring, and its healthcare system is considered one of the most digitally advanced in Europe. Dr. Kallas has been at the forefront of integrating digital health tools into cardiology practice, including remote cardiac monitoring for heart failure and post-MI patients.

He completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUS) in Finland, building on the historically close medical ties between Estonia and Finland — the two countries share linguistic and cultural links. His Finnish training gave him expertise in a high-volume Scandinavian-standard cardiac center.

Dr. Kallas is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and contributes to Baltic cardiology educational networks. He is known for combining technical excellence in the catheterization laboratory with a forward-looking interest in digital health innovation.

Dr. Kallas graduated from the University of Tartu Faculty of Medicine in Estonia in 2003. He completed his cardiology residency at PERH and undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship at Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUS), Finland (2008–2009). His PhD from the University of Tartu in 2012 focused on remote monitoring outcomes in post-MI heart failure patients. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and is certified by the Estonian Health Board in cardiology.

Dr. Kallas specializes in interventional cardiology including coronary angioplasty, stent implantation, primary PCI for acute MI, and FFR-guided complex PCI. He performs comprehensive echocardiography and manages heart failure using digital remote monitoring platforms — a particular strength given Estonia's advanced e-health infrastructure. He manages the full spectrum of cardiovascular disease including hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and valvular heart disease. He also integrates wearable device data and electronic health records into clinical decision-making.

Dr. Kallas has published over 22 peer-reviewed articles in journals including the European Heart Journal Digital Health and Kardiologia Polska. His research focuses on remote monitoring in heart failure, digital health integration in interventional cardiology, and PCI outcomes in the Estonian population. He collaborates with cardiologists in Finland and Sweden and participates in Baltic and Nordic cardiology research networks.

Dr. Kallas speaks Estonian, Finnish, and English and has experience treating international patients, particularly from Finland and Scandinavia who benefit from Tallinn's proximity — Helsinki is just 80 km away by ferry. PERH has an international patient service with English-language reports. Dr. Kallas received the Estonian Society of Cardiology Award for Clinical Innovation in 2019 for his contributions to digital cardiology. He has received ESC recognition for his work on digital health in cardiology and presented at ESC Digital Health congresses.
