Dr. Nomvula Nkosi

Dr. Nomvula Nkosi is an internist at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital (RFMH) in Manzini, Eswatini's largest city and commercial hub. RFMH is a mission hospital affiliated with the Nazarene Church, which has operated as one of the country's most important healthcare institutions for over a century, serving the Manzini district and patients from across the Lubombo and Shiselweni regions. With 12 years of specialist internal medicine experience, Dr. Nkosi has built her practice around the intersection of HIV medicine and non-communicable disease that defines the health challenge facing the Swazi population in the twenty-first century. Adults living with HIV who are on antiretroviral therapy are living longer in Eswatini, but are increasingly experiencing HIV-associated complications and comorbid conditions including hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, all of which fall within Dr. Nkosi's expertise. She is also experienced in managing rheumatic heart disease, a condition seen in young adults across sub-Saharan Africa as a consequence of inadequately treated streptococcal infections. Dr. Nkosi is fluent in English and SiSwati and brings a strong commitment to holistic, patient-centred internal medicine care at one of Eswatini's most established hospitals.

Dr. Nkosi obtained her MBChB at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and subsequently completed an MMed in Internal Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, institutions that have trained a significant proportion of Eswatini's specialist physicians. Her specialist training included rotations through HIV medicine, nephrology, cardiology, and endocrinology, providing the broad internal medicine foundation required for practice in a country with a complex and shifting disease burden. She returned to Eswatini and joined RFMH as its internal medicine specialist.

Dr. Nkosi's clinical expertise spans the management of HIV and its long-term complications, initiation and optimisation of antiretroviral therapy including third-line regimens, and management of opportunistic infections. She diagnoses and manages hypertension, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and anaemia, conducting systematic workup adapted to the laboratory capabilities available at RFMH. She interprets electrocardiograms and echocardiographic reports for cardiac conditions including rheumatic heart disease and HIV-associated cardiomyopathy. She coordinates with surgical colleagues and international referral partners when patients require specialist interventions beyond RFMH's capacity.

Dr. Nkosi has contributed to research on HIV-associated non-communicable diseases conducted through partnerships between Eswatini's Ministry of Health and international academic institutions including the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has participated in national HIV treatment programme audits and has presented at the Eswatini Medical and Dental Association annual scientific conference on the management of HIV-related kidney disease.

Dr. Nkosi provides internal medicine consultations for international visitors to Manzini, including health workers, missionaries, and travellers who require medical assessment during their time in Eswatini. RFMH has a long tradition of serving international patients and has established systems for managing foreign medical documentation and payment arrangements. Dr. Nkosi communicates in English.
