Dr. Mulugeta Bekele Tadesse

Dr. Mulugeta Bekele Tadesse is one of Ethiopia's most distinguished cardiologists, serving as a senior specialist at Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Specialized Hospital — the country's largest and most advanced teaching hospital, affiliated with Addis Ababa University. He is Tikur Anbessa's primary specialist for echocardiography — performing transthoracic and, where available, transoesophageal echocardiograms to assess valve function, cardiac chamber dimensions, pericardial effusions, and ventricular wall motion abnormalities. This makes him the go-to consultant for definitive cardiac diagnosis across referral networks spanning much of Ethiopia.

His management of rheumatic heart disease is particularly extensive: he supervises long-term penicillin prophylaxis programmes, evaluates patients for surgical valve correction, and manages the full spectrum of complications including progressive mitral stenosis, atrial fibrillation, and pulmonary hypertension. In heart failure management, he applies evidence-based pharmacotherapy including ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and diuretics, and he manages patients who present in acute decompensation requiring urgent stabilisation.
