Dr. Johanna Krüger

Dr. Johanna Krüger is a senior consultant neurologist at Oulu University Hospital, the principal academic medical centre serving Northern Finland. With over 25 years of clinical experience, she is one of the region's most established neurologists, managing the full spectrum of neurological disease across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Trained at the University of Helsinki before completing her neurology specialty at Oulu University Hospital, Dr. Krüger has built particular expertise in epilepsy and multiple sclerosis — the two chronic neurological conditions requiring the most intensive long-term specialist management. She holds a PhD in clinical neurology from the University of Oulu, focusing on EEG biomarkers in epilepsy prognosis.

Her clinical practice covers epilepsy diagnosis and medication optimisation, MS diagnosis and disease-modifying therapy selection, stroke acute management and secondary prevention, Parkinson's disease, dementia evaluation, and general outpatient neurology. Dr. Krüger has supervised neurology residents at Oulu University Hospital for over a decade and is committed to evidence-based neurology practice within Finland's universal healthcare system.

Dr. Krüger completed her medical degree (MD) at the University of Helsinki Faculty of Medicine. She undertook her neurology specialty training at Oulu University Hospital, gaining comprehensive experience in clinical neurology, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, and acute neurological emergencies. Her PhD from the University of Oulu focused on EEG biomarkers in newly diagnosed epilepsy, contributing to the evidence base for early treatment initiation in seizure disorders. She holds postgraduate certification from the Finnish Neurological Society (SNY) and has completed advanced MS training through the ECTRIMS educational programme. She holds formal certification from the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in video-EEG telemetry.

Dr. Krüger's neurological practice spans acute inpatient neurology and comprehensive subspecialty outpatient care. In epilepsy, she performs routine and sleep-deprived EEG, video-EEG monitoring, and provides complete assessment from first seizure through to drug-resistant epilepsy, coordinating epilepsy surgery evaluation for appropriate candidates. She manages the full range of anti-epileptic drugs including newer agents.

In multiple sclerosis, she diagnoses and manages relapsing-remitting and progressive subtypes, selecting from platform, moderate-efficacy, and high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies, and monitoring patients on natalizumab, ocrelizumab, and cladribine with MRI surveillance protocols.

For stroke, she manages IV thrombolysis for eligible ischaemic stroke patients and oversees secondary prevention including anticoagulation, antiplatelet therapy, and vascular risk factor reduction. She has published research on EEG biomarkers in epilepsy and MS disease course in Northern Finnish populations.

International patients visiting Finland may access neurology services at Oulu University Hospital as self-paying private patients or through EU Health Insurance Card arrangements. Dr. Krüger conducts consultations in Finnish, Swedish, and English, covering the main languages of Finland's resident and visiting population.
