Dr. Albert Mboumba

Dr. Albert Mboumba is an endocrinologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Libreville (CHUL) — Gabon's largest and most resource-intensive public teaching hospital, and the primary referral center for complex endocrine disorders in the country. With 13 years of endocrinology practice, he manages the full spectrum of endocrine disease relevant to Gabon's evolving disease profile.

Gabon is a relatively prosperous Central African country with oil revenues, and its epidemiological transition has produced a significant rise in non-communicable diseases — particularly type 2 diabetes and its complications. Dr. Mboumba's endocrinology practice is primarily focused on diabetes mellitus and its complications. He manages type 1 and type 2 diabetes including insulin optimization, glycaemic monitoring, and complication surveillance including nephropathy screening and retinopathy referral. He has introduced continuous glucose monitoring technology to CHUL's diabetology service.

In thyroid disease, he manages hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism including Graves' disease, interprets thyroid function tests and thyroid ultrasound, and coordinates fine needle aspiration biopsy for thyroid nodules. He manages adrenal insufficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, and obesity-related endocrine complications. For patients with diabetic ketoacidosis and other acute endocrine emergencies, he provides inpatient consultation across CHUL's wards.

Dr. Mboumba consults in French and Fang. CHUL serves as the primary referral endocrinology center for Gabon and occasionally receives patients from neighboring Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo. He is experienced in managing patients from the Gabonese diaspora in France who seek specialist endocrine care in Libreville during visits.
