Dr. Abena Owusu-Ansah

Dr. Abena Owusu-Ansah is a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana's second-largest city and the cultural capital of the Ashanti Region. KATH is one of the two premier teaching hospitals in Ghana, affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Medicine, and its obstetrics and gynaecology department is one of the busiest and most technically developed in West Africa. With 16 years of specialist practice and advanced fellowships in maternal-foetal medicine, Dr. Owusu-Ansah is recognised as one of Ghana's leading obstetricians and gynaecologists, combining surgical expertise with a deep commitment to improving maternal and reproductive health outcomes for Ghanaian women. Her clinical practice spans the full spectrum of obstetrics and gynaecological surgery: she manages high-risk pregnancies with complications including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, multiple gestation, and recurrent pregnancy loss; performs major gynaecological surgery including laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy; and carries out gynaecological oncology surgery for cervical and ovarian cancer, which remain important causes of cancer mortality among Ghanaian women. She is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and a member of FIGO. She communicates in English, Twi, and Akan, enabling her to connect with patients across the Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo communities she serves.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah completed her MBChB at KNUST School of Medicine in Kumasi and undertook specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at KATH, earning her Fellowship of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. She subsequently obtained a Fellowship in Maternal-Foetal Medicine at a partner institution in the United Kingdom, where she gained advanced training in high-risk obstetric management, foetal diagnosis and surveillance, and perinatal care. She also undertook training in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery in Germany. On returning to Ghana, she established minimally invasive gynaecological surgery at KATH as a standard offering alongside open surgical procedures.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah performs laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy, open caesarean section and complex obstetric surgery, colposcopy with LLETZ for cervical pre-cancer, hysteroscopy for intrauterine pathology, and gynaecological oncology surgery for cervical and ovarian malignancies. Her maternal-foetal medicine expertise includes advanced foetal ultrasound assessment, Doppler surveillance of foetal growth restriction, and management of complex multi-foetal pregnancies. She manages severe preeclampsia with magnesium sulphate, antihypertensives, and timely delivery planning. She oversees gestational diabetes management and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programmes at KATH.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah has authored peer-reviewed research on maternal mortality, uterine fibroid management, and gynaecological cancer outcomes in Ghana, published in international obstetrics and gynaecology journals. She is a clinical lecturer at KNUST and trains specialist registrars in the Ghana College's obstetrics and gynaecology programme. She has presented at FIGO World Congress and at regional WACS meetings on expanding laparoscopic surgery access in West African teaching hospitals.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah provides obstetric and gynaecological care for members of the Ghanaian diaspora returning from the UK, US, and Europe, as well as international patients visiting Kumasi. She is experienced in reviewing foreign obstetric and gynaecological records and provides bridging care for patients managed abroad. She communicates fluently in English. Appointments are arranged through KATH's obstetrics and gynaecology outpatient department.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, a member of FIGO, and a member of the West African College of Surgeons. She has received recognition from KNUST and KATH for her contributions to clinical research and for pioneering laparoscopic gynaecological surgery in the hospital. She is regarded as one of Ghana's leading specialists in maternal-foetal medicine and gynaecological oncology.
