Dr. Kweku Asante-Antwi

Dr. Kweku Asante-Antwi is a consultant surgeon at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra — Ghana's premier public teaching hospital and West Africa's largest hospital complex. With 18 years of surgical experience, he is a senior figure in Ghanaian surgery, managing both emergency and elective surgical cases with particular expertise in abdominal surgery and surgical oncology.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is affiliated with the University of Ghana Medical School and functions as the country's apex surgical referral centre, receiving complex cases from across Ghana and from neighbouring West African countries. Dr. Asante-Antwi has trained at Korle Bu and in collaborative programmes with international surgical partners, achieving Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) — the gold standard surgical qualification for anglophone West Africa.

His oncological surgery practice addresses the growing burden of breast, thyroid, colorectal, and other abdominal malignancies in Ghana, where late-stage presentation remains common due to limited cancer awareness and early detection programmes. He is a strong advocate for surgical oncology capacity development in Ghana.

Dr. Asante-Antwi completed his MBChB at the University of Ghana Medical School and his surgical residency at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He obtained Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) — the premier surgical postgraduate qualification for anglophone West Africa — and holds an MSc in Surgical Oncology. He has participated in Royal College of Surgeons (UK) international fellowship programmes and ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) training workshops, and contributes to the Association of Surgeons of Ghana's continuing professional development activities.

Dr. Asante-Antwi performs the full range of general surgery. His emergency surgical practice includes appendectomy, hernia repair for incarcerated or strangulated hernias, emergency laparotomy for bowel obstruction and gastric perforation, and colostomy formation. His elective surgical practice includes laparoscopic cholecystectomy, open and laparoscopic hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, incisional), and thyroid surgery including total thyroidectomy.

In surgical oncology, he performs mastectomy with axillary clearance for breast cancer, thyroidectomy for thyroid malignancy, right hemicolectomy and sigmoid colectomy for colorectal cancer, and palliative bypass surgery for gastrointestinal obstruction due to advanced malignancy.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital receives patients from across West Africa including Ghana's neighbours Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria for complex surgical care not available in their home countries. Dr. Asante-Antwi consults in English and Twi. Video consultations for second opinions on complex surgical cases are available. For Ghanaian diaspora patients returning from the UK or USA for surgical care, Korle Bu offers internationally trained surgeons at dramatically lower costs than Western centres.

Dr. Asante-Antwi is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and a member of the Ghana Medical Association and Association of Surgeons of Ghana. He has received recognition from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for clinical excellence and postgraduate surgical training. He contributes to the West African College of Surgeons' surgical training programme and has been a faculty member at regional surgical skills workshops supported by the Royal College of Surgeons International and Operation Smile.
