Dr. Abena Asante-Mensah

Dr. Abena Asante-Mensah is a consultant endocrinologist at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital — Ghana's largest and most prestigious teaching hospital, located in Accra and serving patients from across Ghana and West Africa. With 16 years of specialist practice, Dr. Asante-Mensah is recognised as one of Ghana's leading voices on diabetes and metabolic disease.

Ghana, like much of sub-Saharan Africa, faces a rapidly rising epidemic of non-communicable diseases. Type 2 diabetes prevalence in Ghana is estimated at over 6% of adults, driven by urbanisation, dietary change, and reduced physical activity, and is complicated by late diagnosis and limited access to specialist endocrine care in many regions. Thyroid disease — both deficiency and excess — is also prevalent, as is thyroid nodule disease.

Dr. Asante-Mensah trained in endocrinology at the University of Cape Town — South Africa's top-ranked university and one of Africa's leading research medical centres — before returning to Ghana to build endocrine specialist capacity at Korle Bu.

Dr. Asante-Mensah completed her MBChB at the University of Ghana Medical School and was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Internal Medicine — the highest clinical postgraduate qualification in anglophone West Africa. She completed a Fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, gaining experience in diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal disorders, and pituitary disease at one of Africa's leading endocrine centres.

Dr. Asante-Mensah manages type 1 and type 2 diabetes including initiation of insulin therapy, insulin pump (CSII) therapy, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). She conducts HbA1c optimisation and multidisciplinary diabetes foot care coordination.

In thyroid disease, she evaluates thyroid nodules with ultrasound and FNAC, manages hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism (including Graves' disease with antithyroid drugs), and coordinates radioiodine therapy and surgical referral. She manages adrenal insufficiency, Cushing's syndrome, phaeochromocytoma workup, and primary hyperaldosteronism. She also treats PCOS and metabolic syndrome.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is West Africa's leading academic medical centre and receives referrals from across Ghana and neighbouring countries including Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso. Dr. Asante-Mensah provides consultation in English, Twi, and Ga. International patients requiring advanced diabetes management or thyroid evaluation may contact the hospital's outpatient endocrine clinic. Dr. Asante-Mensah is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and completed advanced fellowship training at the University of Cape Town. She is a member of the Ghana Diabetes Association, the International Diabetes Federation, and the Endocrine Society of Ghana. She has contributed to national diabetes care guidelines and has participated in IDF-Africa regional advocacy for diabetes prevention programmes in West Africa.
