Dr. Kwame Asante-Mensah

Dr. Kwame Asante-Mensah is one of Ghana's leading cardiologists, practicing at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, the country's largest and most prestigious public hospital and the principal training institution affiliated with the University of Ghana Medical School. With 20 years of specialist cardiology experience, Dr. Asante-Mensah has built a practice that addresses the full spectrum of cardiac disease affecting Ghanaians, from the longstanding burden of hypertensive heart disease and rheumatic valvular disease to the growing incidence of coronary artery disease driven by urbanisation, dietary change, and the increasing prevalence of diabetes and obesity in Ghana's rapidly expanding middle class. Korle Bu's cardiology department is one of the most developed in West Africa, with access to echocardiography, Holter monitoring, and—through partnerships and periodic visiting interventional teams—coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, placing it at the frontier of cardiac care provision in the region. Dr. Asante-Mensah's Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, obtained through training at partner institutions in Europe and North America, makes him one of a small number of Ghanaian cardiologists capable of performing catheter-based cardiac procedures. Dr. Asante-Mensah completed his MBChB at the University of Ghana Medical School and undertook specialist training leading to the Fellowship of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (FGCP) in cardiology through the Ghana College's postgraduate training programme at Korle Bu. He subsequently undertook a fellowship in interventional cardiology at a European university hospital, where he gained hands-on experience in coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, and structural heart disease procedures. He returned to Ghana and joined Korle Bu as a consultant cardiologist and has remained there throughout his career.

Dr. Asante-Mensah's diagnostic expertise centres on echocardiography, which he performs and interprets with proficiency in assessing ventricular function, valvular pathology, and pericardial disease. He is experienced in coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention for coronary artery disease, pacemaker implantation for significant bradyarrhythmias, and cardioversion for atrial fibrillation and other sustained tachyarrhythmias. He manages heart failure using optimised medical therapy and coordinates device therapy evaluation for eligible patients. His preventive cardiology practice includes risk stratification for stroke and cardiovascular events in hypertensive and diabetic patients. He performs pericardiocentesis for haemodynamically significant pericardial effusion.

Dr. Asante-Mensah has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed papers on hypertensive heart disease outcomes, heart failure epidemiology, and interventional cardiology development in Ghana, published in international cardiology journals including the South African Heart Journal and Pan African Medical Journal. He is an active contributor to research conducted through the Pan African Society of Cardiology and has presented at international cardiology conferences in Africa, Europe, and North America. He is a clinical lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School and a faculty member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons cardiology training programme.
